Position Title:   TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Professional Tutor – MATH & Academic Skills Specialist

Department:   TRIO Student Support Services

Reports To:   TRIO SSS Tutor Coordinator

Compensation:   $15.00 per hour

Position Summary

The TRIO SSS Professional Tutor provides high-impact academic support to first-generation college students, low-income individuals, and students with disabilities. This role delivers targeted individual and small-group tutoring primarily in Mathematics (developmental through upper-level college math), while also providing cross-disciplinary support in Academic Writing and evidence-based Study Strategies. The Professional Tutor fosters student independence, retention, and graduation by utilizing student-centered coaching methods aligned with federal TRIO regulations.

Key Responsibilities

- Direct Academic Instruction & Tutoring

Provide specialized, individual, and small-group tutoring in Mathematics (e.g., Algebra, Calculus, Statistics), introductory writing, and general research/editing skills.

- Integrate cognitive learning strategies, time management, note-taking, and test-preparation techniques directly into subject tutoring sessions.

- Facilitate active learning and critical thinking rather than simply providing answers or editing work for students.

- TRIO Student Success & Mentorship

Support the retention and persistence of non-traditional, first-generation, and underrepresented college students by maintaining an inclusive, accessible learning environment.

- Assist students in navigating academic technology, course portals, and learning management systems (LMS).

- Help students understand faculty expectations and develop effective academic self-advocacy skills.

- Program Administration & Tracking

Maintain precise, confidential records of student attendance, session notes, and academic progress using program tracking software in compliance with FERPA.

- Participate in required TRIO SSS staff meetings, professional development workshops, and program evaluations.

- Collaborate with TRIO staff and college faculty to identify academic warning signs and provide early interventions.

Qualifications

- Required

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Math Education, STEM, or a closely related field.

- Demonstrated proficiency in tutoring/instructing writing mechanics, essay structuring, and college-level study strategies.

- Demonstrated experience working with diverse, underrepresented, first-generation, or low-income student populations.

- Strong interpersonal, communication, and technological skills.

- Availability to work one evening a week (4 hours per week) during school Fall and Spring semesters.

- Preferred

Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish preferred).

- Prior teaching or tutoring experience.
