Job Description
The Certified Nursing Assistant and Registered Nurse Externs works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. They performs multi-skilled duties within the limits of training and certification in caring for the patient.
Assists nursing team with a variety of patient care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort, and safety of patients. Assists patients with personal hygiene, dressing, walking. Changes bed linens and assists with patient transportation to tests and procedures. May serve and collect food trays and provide patients with between-meal nourishment. May record temperature or vital signs under the direction of a nurse.
Minimum Education : A high school diploma or GED required. At least one year of patient care experience in a health care facility or as CNA is preferred or currently enrolled in an accredited Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree nursing program.

Must be enrolled as a current MUSC College of Nursing student, and must have completed the required number of hours for the Medical-Surgical 2 Nursing Course at the College of Nursing. Upon completing the required number of shifts as a Nurse Extern while still enrolled as a College of Nursing student, the Nurse Extern will interview for a Graduate Nurse/RN I position upon graduation from MUSC College of Nursing and passing the NCLEX examination. The Nurse Extern must possess the ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and ability to make accurate physical observation of patients. Applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills required. Position may require working irregular hours under stressful conditions, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends with their designated Nurse Preceptor. Employees must successfully pass the on-line course modules, and skills validation for basic skills. Passing requires achieving an 80% passing rate on each test in two attempts or will result in separation from employment. Trainees are expected to have reliable attendance, are responsible for maintaining their BLS and any other annual competencies. Failure to abide by MUHA policies are subject to disciplinary action, including termination. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
