The (Sr.) Engineer, Real-time Market Operations supports the Real-time Market Operations Department mission by operating and supporting each of the following markets and functions on a daily basis: Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), Real Time Locational Marginal Price (LMP) and ancillary service market clearing price (MCP) calculations and verification, Synchronized Reserve market, Non-Synchronized Reserve market, Regulation market, and the Real-time Energy market. The Engineer will assist in the development of new market rules for these markets and will work on various software integration projects to implement changes to PJM market rules and upgrades to new technology. The Engineer, Real-time Market Operations must also support ad hoc tasks that require data retrieval and analysis.
Essential Duties
- Monitor PJM real-time LMP calculation and ancillary service market clearing price calculation and review prices for accuracy prior to posting.
- Understand and operate PJM’s ancillary service markets (Synchronized Reserve, Non-Synchronized Reserve and Regulation).
- Understand and support PJM's Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) applications.
- Support PJM’s 24x7 operation, which, may include overtime and weekend work schedules to support
- Provide customer support and training.
- Work with other members of the department, Market Services Division and System Operations Division in problem-solving and streamlining processes related to markets, including designing and/or developing applications to streamline such processes.
- Work with other members of the department, Market Services Division and System Operations Division in developing enhancements to market rules in the Real-time Energy and Ancillary Services markets.
- Provide support for documenting and testing enhancements to the applications supported by Real-time Market Operations.
- Perform analysis and document results.
- Work with PJM stakeholders through the committee process and work with neighboring ISO/RTOs to gain approval of new market rules and ensure adherence to the PJM Tariff, JOAs, and/or Manuals.
- Understand the PJM Tariff, JOAs, and/or Manuals, evaluate changes for any potential impacts and recommend actions to management.
Characteristics & Qualifications:
Required
- BS, Engineering or At least 5 years of experience in a role based heavily on engineering fundamentals
- BS, Economics
- BS, Mathematics
- At least 5 years of experience
- Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
- Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
- Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
- Ability to visualize and solve complex problems
Preferred
- MS, Engineering
- MBA, Business Administration
- At least 4 years of experience working with wholesale energy markets Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
- Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
- Experience with technical issues associated with real-time LMP-based energy markets, day-ahead energy markets, ancillary services markets, FTR auctions, capacity markets and/or the market settlement process
- Experience with gathering and documenting business requirements in traditional form or as user stories
- Experience in testing software systems and formal testing process
- Experience in the development and management of test plans, test cases, scenarios, & scripts
- Experience developing queries using Oracle PL/SQL
- Ability to speak and present publicly
