Job Summary
Under direct supervision, supports digitization of collection materials with an emphasis on 3D imaging, documentation, and knowledge sharing. Executes production-level imaging and processing of collection objects using a variety of hardware, software, and capture methodologies to support 2D and 3D imaging workflows.
Supports ongoing 3D imaging projects, including photogrammetry and related capture, processing, quality review, and delivery activities. Works with Imaging staff to document established and emerging 3D workflows, technical procedures, file structures, processing practices, and project requirements to support consistent and repeatable practices across the department.
Contributes to knowledge sharing by organizing documentation, recording lessons learned and recommended practices, and helping make 3D workflows and technical knowledge accessible to other Imaging staff. May assist with demonstrations, testing, and training activities as the department continues to develop its 3D imaging capabilities.
Organizes completed project files in appropriate directories and servers and supports consistent file management, metadata, and data stewardship practices for 3D assets. Consults with senior and lead Imaging staff to ensure work meets established technical specifications, quality standards, and project requirements.
The position provides an opportunity to contribute directly to active 3D imaging projects while helping the department document, strengthen, and share the workflows and knowledge needed to support a sustainable 3D imaging practice.
This is a six-month limited-term position.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Applies basic knowledge of digital capture and the digitization process of cultural heritage materials
- May digitize objects from the collection according to best practices and guidelines determined by the cultural heritage imaging field
- Performs basic post-processing tasks including file preparation, color correction, masking and cropping for ingest into digital repositories or delivery to other digital file destinations
- May arrange layout of materials of basic complexity, lighting, and camera equipment to produce high-quality images
- Performs quality assurance, processing, and batch ingestion of digital files
- Organizes digital files, utilizing file naming and tracking protocols in designated directories, assigns metadata, expedites workflows
- Works with senior staff to maintain physical assessments, movement tracking, and management of collection materials within studio spaces
- May enter and track photography and other duties in support of the imaging and digitization process
- May participate in image cleanup projects
- Follows accurate technical and workflow documentation
- Develops new skills, levels of technical agility, and learns new software to expand possibilities of media production; keeps current with trends and innovations in the imaging community
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders on content production
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in photography and/or equivalent experience
- 1-2 years digital imaging experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Certification in digital imaging preferred
- Basic knowledge of digital imaging, photographic process, lighting, and image editing
- Prior experience with high-end digital cameras, imaging systems, and editing tools preferred
- Intermediate knowledge of Adobe Photoshop software
- Basic knowledge of digital file color correction
- Ability to handle art objects and fragile materials
