Protection & Control Technician 1
Are you ready to play a critical role in maintaining the reliability of the regional power grid? Our company, a premier provider of utility support and engineering solutions, is seeking a skilled and safety-minded Protection & Control Technician 1 .
In this role, you will act as a vital field asset supporting major electrical utility infrastructure by working directly alongside the Start-Up Coordinator and P&C Lead. You will assist with comprehensive technical oversight, field testing, and document management. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience with everything from advanced microprocessor-based relays to critical SCADA systems while ensuring grid safety and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Testing & Technical Assistance: Assist with a wide array of substation device testing, including point-to-point wiring checks, field control cable and wiring verifications (continuity and megger tests), current/voltage loop checks, and functional checks.
- Relay & Meter Support: Learn and assist with protective relay and power meter testing using industry software (Enoserv RTS, Doble Protection Suite). Help manage As-Left settings files and support manual adjustments on electro-mechanical devices.
- Safety & Human Performance Mitigation: Actively assist in applying Human Performance Tools in and around the work zone, including deploying barricades, flagging, isolation devices, and adhering to strict Lock-out/Tag-out (LOTO) procedures. Assist with daily battery/charger measurements, battery ground tests, and the creation of Daily Safety Tailboards (JHAs).
- Documentation & Asset Management: Support the compilation of critical project documentation, including Info Orders, Work Plans, and Functional Test Plans. Assist with the inventory management system using Cascade documents (barcoding, CIP lists, and Equipment Energization lists) and upload files to ProjectWise.
- Print Organization & As-Builts: Maintain a clean, organized work environment and an accurate, well-ordered drawing file system. Assist in drawing As-Builts (redlines) under the direct supervision of the P&C Lead or Start-Up Coordinator.
- Site Logistics & Inspections: Help verify that arriving control panels and field devices are correctly shipped and free of defects. Assist with all physical activities on-site to keep commissioning timelines on track.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Training:
- Minimum Requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Safety Certifications: First Aid and CPR certified; fully trained in fire protection procedures and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage.
- Electrical Safety: Must possess the ability to recognize an Electrically Safe Work Condition (ESWC).
Technical Skills:
- Basic Knowledge: Solid foundational understanding of basic electrical terms, definitions, mathematical concepts, and metric unit conversions.
- Tools: Must own and maintain basic personal tools required to perform electrical work safely (e.g., insulated screwdrivers, fuse pullers, and an appropriate multi-meter).
- Professional Demeanor: Strong analytical problem-solving skills, excellent teamwork habits, and the ability to maintain a highly professional demeanor on utility client job sites.
Core Requirements:
- Valid state driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel to various client substation sites across the designated service territory.
- Availability to respond to emergency call-outs, storm restoration support, and occasional overtime as required.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in team environments.
