Job Title: Drafter Job Description
This role focuses on electrical drafting using Autodesk AutoCAD to support new substation projects, substation upgrades, and maintenance tasks. You will produce accurate and detailed drawings, collaborate closely with engineering staff, and progressively expand your understanding of substation design and electrical systems while contributing to high-quality project deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Create and update electrical drafting drawings for new substations, upgraded substations, and substation maintenance tasks using Autodesk AutoCAD.
- Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and design notes to produce precise and compliant drawings.
- Collaborate with professional engineers and project teams to clarify design intent and incorporate feedback into drawings.
- Ask questions proactively to fully understand project requirements and resolve design or drafting issues in a timely manner.
- Apply substation drafting standards and best practices to ensure consistency and accuracy across all drawings.
- Support both electrical and mechanical aspects of substation drafting as required by project scope.
- Organize, maintain, and revise drawing files and documentation in accordance with established procedures.
- Use available technology tools to improve drafting efficiency, accuracy, and workflow.
- Participate in design discussions and contribute ideas that enhance constructability, safety, and maintainability of substation designs.
- Develop knowledge beyond basic CAD work by learning the reasoning behind design decisions and the operation of electrical substations.
- Communicate clearly with team members, providing updates on progress, issues, and proposed solutions.
- Demonstrate leadership behaviors within the drafting function, such as taking initiative on tasks and supporting team coordination.
Essential Skills
- 0 to 5 years of experience in drafting, preferably with exposure to electrical or substation projects.
- Proficiency with Autodesk AutoCAD and strong practical experience in CAD-based drafting.
- Experience or exposure to substation drafting, electrical drafting, or related mechanical drafting work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and seek clarification.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and show leadership tendencies within project or team settings.
- High level of computer and technology proficiency, with the ability to quickly learn new tools and systems.
- Ability to think creatively and solve problems using available tools and resources.
- Motivation to learn and understand the reasoning behind design decisions and to grow beyond basic CAD tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in a consulting engineering environment is a strong plus.
- Industry experience with utilities or electrical systems design is highly beneficial.
- Proficiency with additional design software such as MicroStation or Autodesk Inventor is beneficial but not required.
- Interest in developing deeper expertise in substation design and electrical systems over time.
Work Environment
You will work in a professional engineering office environment alongside experienced engineers and technical staff. The role involves regular use of Autodesk AutoCAD and other modern design and productivity tools in a structured yet collaborative setting. Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chesterfield, MO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
