About this role
### Job Description (General Summary)
Thousands of people and businesses depend on a process that takes months. It should take days.
You build the proof: a system that moves a request from submitted to decided in five business days.
Laitram is seeking an AI Software Engineering Associate for a four-month, hands-on contract position. In this role, you will design, build, and deliver a working AI-powered software prototype from concept through implementation. This is a hands-on software engineering project to spearhead a project from start to finish — not one small part of one. You will design, build, and ship a working AI-powered software prototype end-to-end. The specifics of the project will be scoped and assigned at the start of the contract.
### Job Responsibilities and Requirements
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and deliver a functional AI-powered software prototype.
- Build and integrate the application’s back end, APIs, and user interface.
- Integrate AI and large language model (LLM) capabilities into a practical application.
- Translate a real-world business process or challenge into clear technical and product requirements.
- Prioritize features and make practical design decisions to deliver an end-to-end solution within the internship period.
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to gather feedback and refine the solution.
- Document the application, key technical decisions, and recommendations for potential future development.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and results clearly to project stakeholders.
Requirements
- Demonstrated full-stack web development experience, including independently building a back end, an API, and a functional front end.
- Hands-on experience integrating AI or LLM APIs into an application, including prompt design, structured outputs, and working with document or image inputs.
- Ability to move quickly from concept to a functional solution and improve it through iteration and feedback.
- Comfort working through ambiguity and breaking a complex, real-world problem into achievable milestones.
- A bias for execution— prefers a rough thing working end-to-end over a perfect thing that only works in theory
- Comfort with ambiguity and good product instincts — can take a messy real-world process and decide what to build first.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently while actively seeking input and collaborating with others.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in applying software and AI to improve processes and create efficiencies across business functions or industries.
- Experience with computer vision, document processing, or document-understanding technologies.
- Familiarity with workflow orchestration, state-machine patterns, or data visualization.
- Experience training, evaluating, or fine-tuning a model using a real-world dataset.
What We Offer
- A portfolio centerpiece. A working software product the intern can showcase.
- Ownership of a meaningful project from initial concept through delivery.
- Practical experience building a software solution that addresses a real business need.
- Close collaboration with experienced technical and business leaders.
- The opportunity to strengthen your portfolio with a working end-to-end software product, subject to Intralox confidentiality and intellectual property requirements.
- A challenging, collaborative environment that values initiative, creativity, and continuous improvement.
- Possibility for long term position. If this project is successful, the opportunity for permanent work will be strongly considered.
