Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and recommend workflow improvements. This position involves handling blood draws, labeling and processing specimens, and maintaining accurate patient records.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
- Centrifuge and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients.
- Demonstrate the use of straight and butterfly needles.
- Understand and execute physicians' orders accurately.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Ensure specimens are labeled, centrifuged, split, and frozen as required.
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and ensure proper storage conditions.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Participate in annual departmental training sessions.
- Handle telephone inquiries and relay laboratory results.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen handling.
- Experience in blood draw, labeling, and sample preparation.
- Familiarity with data entry and medical assisting procedures.
- Ability to handle patient specimens and manage specimen storage.
- Experience with pediatrics and use of Cerner software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Completion of High School or GED.
- Phlebotomy certification is not required.
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures independently.
- Proven experience with pediatric patient blood draws; geriatric experience is a plus.
- Preferred: 2 years of experience in diverse environments such as PSCs, doctor's offices, and hospitals.
- Experience in handling pediatric patients, including holding babies and toddlers.
Work Environment
The position operates within a busy OBGYN office with two phlebotomists handling a high volume of patients, including fertility and new OBGYN cases. The role involves compassion towards patients, especially in sensitive situations. Shift hours are Monday to Friday, with PSC operating from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and IOP from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The home base is in Indianapolis, with responsibilities extending to the north side of Indy up to Kokomo and surrounding areas, and occasionally West Lafayette. Mileage and drive time compensation are provided when applicable.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
