Teachers Assistant / Paraprofessional
Reports to: Teacher, Director
Supervises: Students
An employee in this position provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. The work is performed under the supervision of the classroom teacher and director.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide group instruction as indicated by the classroom teacher
- Provides individualized instruction based on student needs
- Demonstrate various instructional strategies infused throughout activities
- Monitor work and activities assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Check and correct students' work while in progress
- Keeps students engaged and on task
- Praise and reinforce the achievement of students, celebrate student success in all areas
- Report student progress to teacher
- Instructional Preparation/Support including, but not limited to: Preparing visual aids or communication supports, duplicating materials, laminating, reorganizing materials, distributing and collecting materials
- Assist as a substitute teacher as needed
- Help classroom furnishings and equipment
- Assist with the daily collection of student data related to academic progress, IEP goals, and behavior
- Assist with the collection of attendance
- Assist with student hygiene and independent functioning needs including, but not limited to: toilet training and toileting assistance, handwashing, feeding
- Reconciles minor student conflicts
- Implementing the Teachers lesson plans and maintaining daily classroom schedules
- Supporting each childs social, emotional and intellectual growth and development
- Ensuring the wellbeing and safety of children at all times
- Using a variety of instructional and assessment strategies, as directed by the Teacher, to meet individual student needs
- Assisting students with assignments or difficult concepts
- Maintaining communication with parents, staff and faculty regarding the progress of students
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children
- Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made
- Knowledge of the school, organization and the community
- Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines
- Skill to make learning aids/assistive technology which will strengthen lesson plans
- Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective
- Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.
- Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension
- Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and consequences
- Ability to solve independently most minor problems
- Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
- Ability to record and store data accurately
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven organizational and time management skills
- Ability to maintain a professional personal appearance, attitude and work behavior at all times

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school.
- 2 year degree from a Community College
- 2 years of college, or the equivalent of 2 years of college
- Possession of an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
- Must enjoy children and show interest in their developmental growth.
- Good moral character, appropriate local police screening, and appropriate Abuse Registry Clearance.
- Three personal references.
- Certification in CPR and First aid (will train if necessary)
