About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, high-caliber AS400 Developer / Application Administrator to support critical public-sector initiatives. In this role, you will serve as the core technical resource responsible for legacy application maintenance, database tuning, and environment administration across OID’s enterprise IBM AS/400 (IBM i Series) platform. You will collaborate closely with managed hosting partners, cloud architects, and agency stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted daily operations while helping lay the groundwork for long-term cloud modernization and data transition. This position offers a flexible 20-hour work week in an Oklahoma City hybrid-remote model.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legacy Application Maintenance & Support
- Maintain, modify, and optimize mission-critical custom applications written in RPG, RPG III, RPG IV (ILE RPG), RPGLE , and Control Language (CL) .
- Troubleshoot complex operational bugs, resolve batch run anomalies, and address user-reported production issues promptly.
- Implement business logic modifications and rule updates to align with state regulatory mandates, licensing workflows, and statutory updates.
2. Application Administration & Hosting Liaison
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact interfacing with third-party managed hosting providers (e.g., Ensono) regarding OS patching, maintenance windows, database utility execution, and infrastructure updates.
- Administer application-level security configurations, user profiles, and object-level authorities.
- Monitor and analyze security audit journals ( QAUDJRN ) to maintain system integrity and compliance.
- Manage local job queues, active subsystems, and application job schedules.
- Coordinate backup schedules, disaster recovery exercises, and system restore verifications.
3. DB2 Database & System Integration
- Query, administer, and tune DB2 for i databases; optimize SQL queries and indexes to sustain high database performance.
- Maintain and monitor secure automated data pipelines and file transfers ( SFTP / FTP ) between the hosted AS400 partition and downstream state, regional, and partner enterprise systems.
4. Modernization & Migration Enablement
- Partner with state database administrators and enterprise cloud architects to extract, scrub, and archive legacy tables.
- Document legacy application flows, data schemas, interdependencies, and operational logic to facilitate smooth transitions toward modern cloud platforms.
Required Experience & Skills
- Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in AS400 / IBM i / iSeries application development, enhancement, and production support.
- Core Languages: Advanced proficiency in RPG IV (ILE RPG) , RPGLE , CL , and SQL for DB2 on i .
- Database Management: Demonstrated ability to query, optimize, and manage DB2 for i relational databases.
- Hosted Environment Coordination: Proven background operating within a third-party managed or hosted AS400 environment, working directly with vendor infrastructure teams.
- IBM i Administration: Practical experience in work management, active subsystems, user profile permissions, and application-level security management.
- Integrations: Solid track record configuring and troubleshooting secure batch file exchanges ( FTP / SFTP ).
Preferred Attributes
- Prior experience supporting state government, public sector, or insurance regulatory environments.
- Familiarity with legacy modernization strategies, cloud data staging, or ETL extraction projects.
- Strong independent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly across cross-functional teams.
