Staff Accountant (Remote, Greater NYC Area)

Location: Remote (Must reside in the Greater New York City Tri-State Area) Schedule: Remote with onsite meetings in Manhattan approximately twice per month Compensation: $34 to $37 per hour

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to support daily accounting operations, month-end close, financial reporting, and compliance activities. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys working independently, improving processes, and contributing to a fast-paced, remote-first organization.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Operations

- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close activities.
- Monitor cash balances and support cash flow forecasting.
- Maintain accounts payable and accounts receivable aging reports.
- Process payroll-related accounting entries and reconcile payroll activity.
- Support vendor payments, wire transfers, and banking activities.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

- Prepare monthly financial reports, including P&L and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Analyze variances and assist with budget-to-actual reporting.
- Reconcile bank accounts and payment platforms.
- Maintain fixed asset schedules and depreciation records.
- Assist with revenue and expense analysis.

Compliance & Audit Support

- Support annual audits and preparation of financial documentation.
- Assist with 1099 processing, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
- Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company controls.

Process Improvement

- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and increase efficiency.
- Utilize technology, automation tools, and advanced Excel techniques to streamline processes.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to support operational and financial objectives.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 2+ years of accounting experience with involvement in the monthly close process.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online required.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and financial analysis.
- Strong reconciliation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with multi-entity or multi-currency accounting environments.
- Familiarity with payroll processing and payment platforms.
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and audit support.
- Experience leveraging AI or automation tools to improve business processes.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job
