Senior AI/ML Scientist, Weather Forecasting

We are looking for a Senior AI/ML Scientist who is excited to bridge cutting-edge machine learning research, operational customer needs, and scientific collaboration. In this role, you will work hands-on with code, data, and foundation models to translate our unique atmospheric observations into measurable forecast improvements and real-world value. GNSS meteorology expertise is valuable but not required. Depth in AI weather modelling and the ability to learn a new observation domain quickly matter most.

How You will make an impact

- Advance AI Weather Modelling: Lead hands-on efforts to integrate Skyfora’s novel atmospheric observations into open-source AI weather frameworks (e.g., GraphCast, GenCast, Aurora, FourCastNet, Earth-2, AIFS). Design rigorous experiments and collaborate with external model developers to prove measurable gains in forecast skill.

- Drive Customer Solutions: Partner directly with customers and end-users to bring Skyfora data into their workflows. Own technical workstreams from early prototyping through operational deployment, serving as a trusted scientific partner.

- Engage the Scientific Community: Represent Skyfora at global conferences and open-source forums. Build meaningful relationships across the AI-weather ecosystem and share insights through presentations and technical content.

- Shape Our Technical Culture: Mentor colleagues, foster a culture of reproducibility and open knowledge sharing, and contribute to our long-term AI strategy, tooling, and best practices.

What You bring to the team

- True Seniority: You bring genuine seniority to the role, demonstrated by significant years in the field, a strong portfolio of your own results, and an established professional network.

- AI Weather Lab Experience: You must have 6 to 12 months of hands-on experience working directly with a leading AI weather or climate modelling lab.

- Deep ML Model Development: Real depth in machine learning model development and a practical track record of creating, adapting, or evaluating models for weather forecasting, nowcasting, or geospatial applications.

- Scientific Visibility: An established presence in the scientific community. Publications and conference speaking experience are requirements for this role.

- Educational Foundation: Advanced degree (MSc/PhD) in Machine Learning, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field—or equivalent hands-on industry/research experience.

- Core Technical Skills: Proficiency in Python, modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch), and handling scientific or multidimensional data formats.

- Experimental Rigor: Experience designing fair benchmarks, ablation studies, and evaluation pipelines to measure model performance accurately.

- End-to-End Ownership: Ability to take concepts from initial research prototypes to robust operational workflows alongside commercial or research partners.

- Collaborative Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to collaborate across cross-functional teams (engineering, business, and research) in an agile environment.

Bonus points for

- Familiarity with numerical weather prediction (NWP), data assimilation, or satellite/radar/GNSS datasets.

- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), MLOps, or reproducible pipeline automation.

- Experience interfacing with external customers or commercial partners to understand requirements and support product integration.
