We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Manufacturing Engineer to lead and coordinate plant-funded projects for gear manufacturing and machining operations. This role involves overseeing projects from the initial concept through to installation, launch, and financial closeout, ensuring alignment with production schedules and budgets.
Responsibilities
- Lead the coordination of gear manufacturing and machining projects from initial concept to financial closeout.
- Partner with engineering teams to define project scope, timelines, and resource requirements for capital and quality improvement projects.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, ensuring alignment with gear production schedules and downtime windows.
- Track project milestones and escalate risks or delays to engineering and plant leadership.
- Support the development of Appropriation Requests and project cost justifications for new equipment and tooling.
- Monitor project spending against approved budgets and report variances.
- Coordinate with finance and purchasing for timely vendor payments and documentation.
- Translate gear quality concerns into actionable improvement projects.
- Coordinate the design, procurement, and installation of error-proofing devices and process changes.
- Track corrective action projects to resolve gear quality concerns permanently.
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from vendors and contractors for gear-cutting machinery and systems.
- Coordinate contractor scheduling, site access, safety orientation, and permitting.
- Serve as the on-site point of contact for contractors during equipment installation.
- Maintain organized project files and prepare regular status updates for management.
- Support audits related to project documentation and compliance.
- Act as a liaison between various departments throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support new program launches by coordinating tooling and equipment projects.
- Assist manufacturing engineers with administrative and coordination tasks.
- Work flexible hours to support project timelines and plant schedules, including evenings or weekends as needed.
Essential Skills
- Process engineering and improvement
- Project management experience within an automotive manufacturing facility
- Experience with machining operations, particularly CNC machines
- Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED with 1+ year of experience in project coordination or management
- 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in gear manufacturing or machining
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- 2 or more years in the automotive or gear/powertrain manufacturing industry
- Familiarity with gear manufacturing processes such as blanking, hobbing, and heat treatment
- Experience with quality tools like FMEA, 8D, 5-Why, and PPAP
- Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma exposure, including Poka-yoke
- Experience coordinating with vendors and contractors for machinery installations
- Project Management certification (PMP, CAPM) is a plus
Work Environment
This role requires flexibility to support project timelines and plant schedules. The successful candidate may occasionally need to work off-shift hours, including evenings or weekends, to accommodate contractor access, equipment installs, or gear production downtime windows. The work environment is dynamic, involving collaboration with cross-functional teams and external contractors.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $50.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
