The Accounting Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the accounting function, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and purchasing. Reporting to the VP of Finance & Assistant Controller, this role provides senior-level accounting support through the maintenance of accurate financial records, preparation of financial reports, administration of accounting processes, and monitoring of internal controls. The Accounting Manager plays a key role in ensuring efficient, accurate, and compliant financial operations while supporting the overall administration and effectiveness of the accounting department.
What You’ll Do
- Lead & Manage Accounting Operations
- Provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, and related accounting functions, ensuring accurate, efficient, and timely operations.
- Direct, supervise, train, coach, and evaluate accounting staff; establish priorities and performance expectations; and support recruitment, staffing, and professional development.
- Assign and monitor work, provide guidance on complex accounting matters, and ensure departmental responsibilities, deadlines, and performance standards are consistently met.
- Serve as a key resource and leader for accounting staff while providing operational support to the broader Finance and Accounting team.
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Receivable & Purchasing
Manage AP and AR operations, including vendor management, invoicing, billing, payments, collections, aging, and account reconciliations, ensuring compliance with established policies and internal controls.
- Oversee purchasing activities, including vendor relationships, receiving, purchase order accuracy, and timely closeout.
- Monitor AP and AR activity and aging reports, identify issues or risks, and ensure appropriate follow-up, resolution, and escalation.
- Maintain effective relationships with vendors, customers, internal departments, and agency-wide stakeholders to resolve accounting, billing, purchasing, and collection matters.
- Strengthen Processes, Controls & Performance
Develop, implement, and maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls while identifying opportunities to strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and improve efficiency.
- Lead process and system improvements that enhance accuracy, accountability, consistency, and service across accounting operations.
- Monitor departmental workflows and results, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions to improve overall team and operational performance.
- Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and control reports, and ensure AP and AR reconciliations are completed accurately.
- Assist with the annual 1099 process, including reviewing vendor information, coordinating required documentation, and supporting the preparation and timely filing of 1099 forms.
- Assist with interim and annual audits by coordinating documentation and ensuring timely and accurate responses to audit requests.
- Partner Across the Organization
Collaborate with leadership and department personnel to address accounting, billing, purchasing, and collection issues and provide sound financial and operational guidance.
- Serve as the primary backup to the Accounting Manager – General Ledger, providing coverage and leadership as needed.
- Support Finance Department initiatives, special projects, and other related responsibilities as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline, along with 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience; equivalent education, training, and experience may be considered.
- At least 3 years of experience supervising or managing accounting personnel, with demonstrated success leading, developing, and motivating teams.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, processes, internal controls, and financial operations, with experience working across accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Experience with both manual and automated accounting systems; Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, with the ability to effectively use accounting, financial, and database management systems.
- Strong analytical, technical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills, with the ability to identify potential issues, assess risks, and develop practical solutions.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and accountability.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-management skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to recruit, train, coach, supervise, and evaluate staff while fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment.
- Knowledge of nonprofit, governmental, and regulatory accounting practices is a plus.
