Sunstates Security is hiring an Staff Accountant to be based at our corporate headquarters in Raleigh, NC . The Staff Accountant supports the Company's financial accounting and reporting function through preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, financial schedules, and other month-end close activities. This position works closely with the Manager to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger and financial statements. The Staff Accountant is expected to investigate variances, resolve discrepancies, maintain supporting documentation, and identify opportunities to strengthen and streamline accounting processes.
This position is based at Sunstates Security's Raleigh corporate headquarters and is primarily an in-office role, with hybrid flexibility based on business needs and successful integration into the role. This position offers a slalry of $80,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package including a performance-based bonus, 401 (k) with company match, full medical, dental, vision and life instuance coverage, tuition assistiance and more.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, allocations, and other general ledger adjustments.
- Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and investigate and resolve reconciling items.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes in accordance with established deadlines.
- Prepare and maintain schedules supporting prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accruals, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Perform bank and other cash account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Assist with revenue and expense accruals, including analysis of activity across accounting periods.
- Review general ledger activity for unusual transactions, coding errors, missing accruals, and other exceptions.
- Assist with monthly profit and loss and balance sheet analysis and investigate significant or unusual variances.
- Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for external audits, tax filings, and other financial reporting requirements.
- Assist with sales and use tax reporting and other recurring accounting compliance activities.
- Support accounting for leases, fixed assets, prepaids, commissions, and other recurring or specialized accounting areas as assigned.
- Partner with Accounting Operations to research and resolve items affecting the general ledger while maintaining clear ownership between transactional processing and financial accounting.
- Maintain organized supporting documentation and contribute to the development and maintenance of accounting standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen controls, reduce manual work, and improve the timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting.
- Assist the Manager with special projects, financial analysis, and other accounting initiatives as needed.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Success in this role requires strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will be expected not only to prepare accounting schedules and reconciliations, but also to understand the underlying activity, investigate unusual items, identify trends and exceptions, and clearly communicate findings to management.
Job Requirements
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS DESIRED:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Accounting degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and month-end close responsibilities.
- Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP and general ledger accounting.
- Experience preparing journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations and participating in month-end close.
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to research discrepancies through resolution.
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including experience working with large data sets, lookups, pivot tables, and formulas.
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems required; experience with WinTeam or other high-volume or multi-entity systems is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively across Accounting, Finance, and Operations.
- Experience with process improvement, automation, or accounting/reporting tools is a plus.
