Summary
NDT Level 2 Inspectors are responsible, under the direction of the Level 3, for determining the serviceability of components and assemblies in accordance with specifications, drawings and acceptance of NDT inspection activities. They are thoroughly familiar with and maintain proficiency in the use of techniques and equipment utilized in their respective NDT inspection methods for which they are qualified/certified for determining the quality of a component undergoing inspection. They have knowledge in the use of the technical specification library involving inspecting tolerances, limits, acceptability requirements and procedures as determined by the customers. They are able to record the status of each inspection operation being performed.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: (these are in addition to the level 1 requirements):
- A Level 2 Inspector is qualified to direct and perform tests in the NDT method certified in.
- Capable of reading & interpreting indications and evaluating them to applicable acceptance standards, specifications, etc and document the results.
- Skills & knowledge to conduct system performance checks in accordance with the applicable process standard.
- Thoroughly familiar with the scope & limitations of the specified NDT method.
- Ability to apply detailed techniques to products or parts within their limits of qualification.
- Know the practical theory of the related NDT methods
- Familiar with and, as required, use governing manuals, procedures, etc. for assistance in utilizing techniques.
- Aware of the need for and the limitations of reference standards.
- Familiar with the types and locations of expected defects for the fabrication process used to manufacture the component.
- Basic knowledge of relevant product manufacturing and inspection technology
- Able to organize and report test results and maintain records.
Qualifications
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual is able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Level 2 Inspectors pass an annual eye examination. Candidates certifying to NDT Level 2 pass general, specific, and practical qualification examinations.
Education and/or Experience: A Level 2 inspector must have satisfactorily completed a period of experience training conducted under the guidance of a certified Level 3 in the specific NDT method. The experience-training period is 270 hours for penetrant and 1200 hours for radiographic testing method. A minimum of 25% of the experience training is achieved in evaluating, inspection, and interpreting components to the required acceptance standards. A Level 2 inspector has completed formal classroom training, guided by a Level 3 in the related NDT method, using approved textbooks. The classroom training period is 16 hours for penetrant and 40 hours for radiographic testing method. (When certified as a Level 1 first)

Specific vision abilities required to do this job include 20/25 (Snellen) at 16 +/-1 in at least one eye, natural or corrected. Personnel are capable of adequately distinguishing and differentiating colors used in the process involved. Any limitations in color perception are evaluated by the responsible level 3 prior to certification and must be approved in writing.
