About this role

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through technology licensing, the development of sponsored research agreements, and venture creation. We serve as business advisors to investigators at all ten schools of the university whose research has commercial potential. Our resources include intellectual property (IP) protection, technology analysis, marketing and licensing support, translational and venture funding support, physical space through our FastForward innovation hubs, and professional services such as mentorship, pro bono legal and accounting services, and educational programming.

We are seeking a Sr. Technology Licensing Associate  who will work closely with inventors, companies, and prospective licensees to advance the commercialization of university-owned technologies through licensing and related technology transfer activities.Reporting to the Director, Licensing, the Sr. Technology Licensing Associate will independently manage a portfolio of software and digital technologies in order to evaluate commercial opportunities and source, negotiate, and execute intellectual property licenses.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

- Develop positive relationships with inventors with the intention of identifying attractive JHU technologies for licensing to start-up or established companies.
- In concert with peers, make decisions around patenting, marketing, and licensing of JHU inventions.
- Engage with investors and companies to determine their needs and identify applicable JHU technologies for licensing.
- Negotiate high-value intellectual property licenses for optimal deal structure, valuation, and compliance.
- Work under the direct supervision of the Director of Licensing in evaluation, marketing, and agreement negotiation activities. May manage or mentor junior personnel as assigned.
- Make recommendations but not final decisions concerning investments in technologies.
- Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties described above

- Develop and maintain expertise in the commercialization of software, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, and other digital technologies.
- Evaluate software-based inventions and digital innovations for commercial potential and licensing readiness.
- Advise inventors regarding software intellectual property considerations, including copyright protection, open-source software usage, and software-related licensing strategies.
- Develop and execute marketing strategies to identify prospective licensees for software and digital technology assets.
- Conduct market, competitive landscape, and commercial viability assessments to support software licensing activities.
- Negotiate licensing and related agreements involving software technologies and digital intellectual property.
- Assist in the development of commercialization strategies for software technologies, including licensing approaches appropriate for startup and established company licensees.
- Monitor emerging trends in software, artificial intelligence, digital health, and related markets to inform licensing and commercialization strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

- An advanced Degree.
- Four years of licensing and technology transfer experience.
- This position does not allow for education or experience substitutions.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

- U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
- JD or MBA with strong technical expertise may be acceptable.
- Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) or CLP eligible.
- Experience licensing software, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, digital health, data science, or related technologies.
- Familiarity with software intellectual property, including copyright, open-source software licensing, software development workflows, and data rights considerations.
- Experience evaluating commercialization pathways for software technologies in startup and established company environments.
- Familiarity with software business models, including software-as-a-service (SaaS), enterprise software, platform technologies, and subscription-based offerings.
- Experience negotiating or supporting software-related licensing transactions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with software developers, technical founders, and engineering-focused research teams.

Starting Salary Range: $102,295 - $140,835 - $179,375 Annually ($140,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
