Mentor (18+ Month Term Position)

Sagkeeng Child and Family Services (SCFS) is a First Nations CFS Agency who strives to recruit inspired, accountable, and driven individuals to join our diverse talented team of professionals.  We are currently recruiting for a permanent fulltime Mentor for our Agency.

Requirements:

- Diploma or certificate in Child and Youth Care, Social Services, Human Services, Family Support, Community Development, or a related field.

- Equivalent combinations of educational experience and relevant work experience may be considered.

- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience working in child welfare or community-based services.

- A comprehensive understanding of Canada’s First Nations history including Aboriginal Justice Inquiry – Child Welfare Initiative and an  Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families.

- Experience working in an Indigenous organization or with Indigenous communities is a strong asset.

- A comprehensive understanding and awareness of the strengths and challenges of Indigenous children, youth, families and communities.

- Practices in a manner consistent with an Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families.

- Valid class 5 driver’s license and fully insured vehicle with $2,000,000.00 liability insurance.

- Condition of employment is obtaining satisfactory driver’s abstract annually or as required.

- Condition of employment is having clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Persons Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry and Prior Contact Check. Updating checks every two/three years.

- Travel is required.

- Flexibility to work days, evenings and weekends based on children, youth and families’ needs.

- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

- Commitment to positive workplace communication and adherence to professional boundaries.

- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and as a team member in a fast paced, challenging environment.

- Demonstrated intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint, Teams) and online tools.

- Demonstrated commitment to continuous life-long learning.

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to):

- Provide exceptional mentoring, coaching and counseling to address client needs.

- Work with children and youth to achieve their personal and cultural goals.

- Work with Niigaan Asemaa (cultural unit) to provide knowledge in the teachings from the land.

- Work with the clinicians and Direct Service Workers to support case plans, and treatment plans, where required.

- Submit monthly case notes and progress reports every six months.

- For group activities, submits program request, funding requirements, travel arrangements and recap of program.

- Provides detailed reports on activities, record keeping and report writing as required; this is to include monthly summaries of activities and progress in the client’s mentorship planning, as well as incident and closing summaries.

- Provide monthly schedule on Outlook to Supervisor.

- Ensure confidentiality and safekeeping of all Agency documents and records, adhering to FIPPA/PHIA.

- Providing holistic supportive services to children, youth and families of Sagkeeng Child and Family Services to preserve the family unit, applying a wraparound and wholistic approach.

- Acts as a role model for the children, youth, families and care providers of the Agency.

- Builds relationships with youth to walk alongside them on their healing journey.

- Connects the children and families with internal and external cultural resources and supports.

- Assists with crisis support for children, youth and families.

- Assists in the development of realistic, complete and appropriate case goals.

- Represents and promotes SCFS through liaisons with community organizations and participation in community events/meetings.

- Assists or creates templates and posters for programs and initiatives.

- Assists, Develops, and Coordinates Land based initiatives.

- Develops and Facilitates workshops, and mentorship programs.

- Works collaboratively with a variety of resources in Sagkeeng, Selkirk and Winnipeg.

- Budget conscious activities, with prior supervisory approval.

- Adhering to agency safety policies and practices in relation to supervision ratios, overnight standards, equipment use, all-terrain vehicles, etc.

- Shop for program supplies. Ensure funds are reconciled within a timely manner.

Qualified candidates will be required to undergo a criminal record check, child abuse registry check, and a prior contact check as a condition of employment.   Sagkeeng Community members and Indigenous candidates will be given preference and are encouraged to self-identify as being of Indigenous descent.
