Danat Al Emarat is a world-class specialty women’s and children’s hospital in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It offers advanced medical services across specialties including Neonatology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Women’s Health. The hospital is one of the very few to encompass a dedicated Fetal Medicine Department along with a full-fledged Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the UAE. This has established Danat Al Emarat as a regional referral center for women with high-risk pregnancies, supported by its Level III NICU providing care for the most fragile newborns.

A Sonographer in Fetal Medicine is a highly skilled healthcare professional responsible for performing specialized obstetric ultrasound examinations to assess fetal growth, development, and well-being throughout pregnancy. Working closely with fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams, the sonographer plays a critical role in the early detection of fetal anomalies, monitoring high-risk pregnancies, and supporting prenatal diagnosis. Through the use of advanced ultrasound technology and adherence to evidence-based practices, the Fetal Medicine Sonographer contributes to optimal maternal and fetal outcomes while providing compassionate care and support to expectant mothers and their families.

Responsibilities

- Perform detailed obstetric and fetal ultrasound examinations, including first, second, and third trimester scans.

- Assess fetal growth, anatomy, well-being, and development throughout pregnancy.

- Conduct specialized fetal medicine scans such as anomaly scans, nuchal translucency scans, fetal echocardiography, and Doppler studies.

- Identify and report fetal abnormalities, congenital anomalies, and pregnancy-related complications.

- Monitor high-risk pregnancies and provide serial ultrasound assessments as requested by fetal medicine specialists.

- Accurately obtain and document fetal biometric measurements and ultrasound findings.

- Prepare comprehensive ultrasound reports and communicate significant findings to the referring physician or fetal medicine consultant.

- Assist physicians during invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) under ultrasound guidance.

- Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and quality control of ultrasound equipment.

- Maintain accurate patient records and imaging documentation in accordance with departmental and regulatory requirements.

- Provide clear explanations of ultrasound procedures to patients and offer emotional support during examinations.

- Adhere to radiation safety, infection prevention, patient privacy, and professional practice standards.

- Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions regarding complex fetal cases.

- Stay updated with advancements in fetal imaging techniques, guidelines, and best practices through ongoing professional development.

- Support clinical audits, research activities, and quality improvement initiatives within the fetal medicine department.

- Ensure patient care is delivered with compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity at all times.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiography, Medical Imaging, or a related healthcare field
