About this role
Accountabilities:
- Provide interim executive leadership for enterprise-wide HB and PB HIM and coding operations across a large health system with hospitals and physician clinics.
- Directly lead and mentor multiple Director-level HIM and Coding leaders, ensuring accountability, consistency, and operational stability across distributed teams.
- Guide coding operations through a major Epic system upgrade and subsequent optimization project while minimizing disruption to productivity, DNFB, and revenue cycle performance.
- Drive operational improvement initiatives across HIM and coding workflows during periods of significant technology and organizational change.
- Partner with Revenue Cycle, Compliance, IT, and executive stakeholders to maintain coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and data integrity.
- Establish, monitor, and report key performance indicators related to coding quality, productivity, turnaround time, and overall operational performance.
- Assess current-state operations and recommend organizational, staffing, and workflow enhancements to improve long-term effectiveness.
- Serve as the primary executive point of accountability for HIM and coding performance throughout the engagement.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in Health Information Management and coding within large, multi-facility healthcare organizations.
- Proven experience at the Senior Director, System Director, Vice President, or equivalent executive leadership level.
- Extensive expertise in both Hospital Billing (HB) and Professional Billing (PB) coding operations.
- Demonstrated success leading HIM and coding teams through Epic upgrades, go-lives, or major optimization initiatives.
- Experience managing multiple Director-level leaders and large, geographically distributed teams.
- Strong knowledge of coding compliance, revenue cycle operations, healthcare regulations, and performance improvement methodologies.
- Exceptional executive communication, stakeholder management, and change leadership skills.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- RHIA or RHIT certification strongly preferred; CCS or equivalent coding credential is a plus.
- Previous interim leadership or healthcare consulting experience is highly desirable.
- Ability to begin within an accelerated implementation timeline and travel as needed to support client sites.
