About this role
Responsibilities
- Act as an active member of a Scrum team, participating fully in all agile ceremonies and maintaining all related artifacts.
- Own the test strategy for billing: Covering rating, mediation, invoicing, taxation, payments, credits, adjustments, dunning, and reseller/white-label billing hierarchies.
- Design and document test coverage for month-end billing cycles, including cutoff and timezone boundaries, reruns, partial failures, and retry safety.
- Perform revenue-assurance testing: Reconciling CDR volumes against invoiced amounts and quantifying the financial impact of any discrepancies.
- Trace billing discrepancies to their root cause: Distinguishing rating-engine defects from mediation or switch-side issues, including reading SIP traces or packet captures when necessary.
- Enforce the requirement intake gate: Ensuring no user story enters a sprint without testable acceptance criteria.
- Set and enforce documentation standards: Ensuring requirement-to-test-case traceability and reviewable per-epic coverage.
- Drive the automation roadmap: Deciding what gets automated, in what order, and with what expected ROI, while conducting code and test reviews for the resulting suites.
- Establish and report billing quality metrics: Defect escape rate, coverage, defect density, and release readiness.
- Mentor billing QA engineers and provide clear technical direction.
- Communicate and escalate product quality risks: Holding ground when supported by data.
Requirements:
- 8+ years in QA , including hands-on experience with a production billing, rating, or payments system.
- Working knowledge of rating and usage billing: Rate decks, prefix matching, billing increments, minimum durations, connection fees, and destination zones.
- Subscription billing experience: Recurring and non-recurring charges, mid-cycle proration, upgrades, downgrades, trials, promotions, and discounts.
- Invoicing experience: Invoice generation, line-item totals, usage detail, credit memos, manual adjustments, refunds, and dunning.
- Strong SQL skills (joins, aggregations, window functions) sufficient to reconcile usage against invoices independently.
- Precision and rounding literacy: Decimal vs. floating-point representation, rounding modes, line-level vs. invoice-level rounding, and identifying where each produces cent-level defects.
- Proven experience leading or mentoring QA engineers.
- A track record of pushing back with evidence: Rejecting untestable requirements, holding releases based on data , and negotiating scope using metrics.
- Proficiency with a formal Test Management System (TMS) and Jira.
- Professional English proficiency (spoken and written) with reliable overlap with US Eastern business hours
We use the following technologies:
- Python & Pytest: For service and integration automation.
- Playwright: For UI automation.
- SQL: For billing and rating data validation—this is a daily tool in this role, not an occasional one.
- Allure TestOps: As our Test Management System (TMS). Automated test cases are linked to TMS cases, and we expect QA to extend coverage directly within it.
- Jira: For project management and defect tracking.
- GitHub Actions (GHA) & Jenkins: For CI/CD, leveraging shared pipeline libraries.
- Grafana: For monitoring quality and delivery metrics, including defect escape rate.
- Third-Party Tax Engine: For telecom tax and regulatory fee calculations.
We are always open to adopting any reasonable tool that drives higher quality into the product.
Pluses:
- Working knowledge of SIP/VoIP call flows as they relate to billable records: call legs, answered vs. unanswered calls, billable vs. elapsed duration, transfers, and conference legs.
- Proficiency in Python /pytest and Playwright: Valued for reviewing, debugging, and evaluating test automation, rather than building frameworks from scratch.
- REST API testing experience against billing and rating services.
- Payment gateway integration testing experience.
- Telecom tax engine validation (Avalara, SureTax, Vertex, or equivalent).
- Multi-currency and FX (foreign exchange) handling experience.
- Familiarity with Jenkins and GitHub Actions (GHA) pipelines , sufficient to analyze and interpret build results.
