Job Title: Fire Protection Engineer Job Description
The Fire Protection Engineer manages and supports facilities engineering and fire protection projects from initial feasibility through final acceptance. This role develops project objectives using best practices, oversees design and construction activities, and monitors project budgets and timelines. The engineer owns site fire protection systems and ensures their safe, compliant, and reliable operation within a dynamic automotive manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage and support engineering projects from feasibility studies through project tender preparation, design, construction, and final acceptance within the assigned area of responsibility.
- Design, communicate, and implement detailed project plans, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and standards.
- Monitor project progress and performance against the project plan, and manage project change orders and RFQ (Request for Quotation) processes.
- Analyze engineering drawings, identify discrepancies, and communicate required corrections to vendors and contractors.
- Prepare engineering designs and work specifications that meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct project meetings, prepare status reports, and collect, analyze, and summarize project information and trends for stakeholders.
- Resolve operational problems and minimize delays by selecting the most appropriate solutions or improving existing approaches and processes.
- Determine project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements, assigning personnel to specific tasks, and reviewing contractor bids.
- Support the establishment and maintenance of contacts with internal and external partners, as well as worldwide external business partners.
- Receive input from project teams and working groups and provide clear reporting to project teams and project committees.
- Help coordinate the work of junior team members and contribute to their development through guidance and support.
- Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings and collaborate effectively within a complex, diverse group environment.
- Own and manage site fire protection systems, including operation, testing, maintenance, and modifications in accordance with NFPA standards.
- Develop, maintain, implement, and audit fire preventive maintenance documents and operating procedures in the iPRO system.
- Ensure technical understanding of construction and facilities maintenance is applied to project planning and execution.
- Perform other engineering and fire protection duties as assigned to support facilities operations and safety.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in engineering, facilities support, or maintenance engineering, ideally with fire protection responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience managing engineering projects from feasibility through design, construction, and final acceptance.
- Strong technical understanding of construction and facilities maintenance in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- NFPA expertise, including NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, and NFPA 101, with the ability to apply these standards to fire protection systems.
- Experience with fire protection system operation, testing, maintenance, and modifications.
- SAP ERP proficiency, with experience as a key user; familiarity with iPRO or SAP-based systems is preferred.
- Ability to manage project budgets, timelines, and change orders while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Strong coordination skills for working with multiple internal and external parties, vendors, and contractors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all organizational levels.
- Ability to work independently while forming and maintaining complex working relationships.
- Proficiency with computer programs, including Windows-based applications.
- Proven ability to function as a team player within a complex, diverse project environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Mid-level professional experience, with at least 2–3 years of relevant engineering or fire protection work.
- Experience in automotive manufacturing or similar industrial environments.
- Experience preparing engineering designs, work specifications, and technical documentation.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and summarize project information and performance trends for reporting and decision-making.
- Experience coordinating the work of junior team members or supporting team leadership activities.
- Comfort working with project teams and project committees, including managing inputs and reporting outcomes.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on minimizing operational delays and improving existing processes.
- Willingness to train further or obtain additional certification related to NFPA standards and fire protection systems, if needed.
- Ability to adapt to SAP-based proprietary systems such as iPRO through training.
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and with external business partners.
Work Environment
This role operates within an automotive manufacturing environment that relies on complex facilities and fire protection systems. The engineer works closely with cross-functional teams, contractors, and external partners to support safe and efficient operations. The position involves regular project meetings, coordination with diverse groups, and use of SAP ERP and iPRO systems, along with standard Windows-based software. The work schedule may offer flexible arrangements, including the potential for four 10-hour days from Tuesday through Friday. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $110000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. -Good benefits (health, medical, vision, dental), relocation assistance, 401k and profit sharing program, opportunities for flex work (potential for 4 10s, Tues – Fri)
