Job Title: Senior Formulator Job Description
The Senior Formulator supports the end-to-end development and commercialization of innovative dietary supplement products. This role leads formulation activities from concept through launch, including benchtop development, scale-up, stability testing, pilot batches, and manufacturing support. The Senior Formulator works closely with cross-functional teams in R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, and Marketing to bring new products to market across multiple dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, powders, gummies, softgels, and other delivery systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize formulations for a wide range of dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, powders, gummies, softgels, and other delivery systems.
- Lead product development activities from pre-formulation through commercialization, ensuring robust, scalable, and compliant formulations.
- Design and execute benchtop, pilot, scale-up, and verification batch studies to support successful technology transfer and manufacturing implementation.
- Develop stability protocols and evaluate stability testing results to ensure product quality and shelf-life expectations are met.
- Support technology transfer activities and guide manufacturing implementation for new and existing products.
- Evaluate raw materials, excipients, and ingredient compatibility to ensure performance, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare detailed technical documentation, including SOPs, batch records, specifications, reports, and development records.
- Troubleshoot formulation and process-related issues during development and production, implementing effective corrective actions.
- Collaborate closely with Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Supply Chain teams to align on project objectives and timelines.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior formulators and laboratory personnel to support their development and ensure best practices.
- Apply formulation science and processing technologies to optimize product performance, manufacturability, and cost.
- Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and use problem-solving skills to address complex technical challenges.
- Leverage Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies, where applicable, to systematically optimize formulations and processes.
- Contribute to process development and commercialization activities to ensure smooth transition from lab-scale to full-scale production.
- Ensure all development and documentation activities comply with relevant GMP standards and regulatory guidelines, including 21 CFR Part 111 and applicable ISO requirements.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline.
- 4+ years of formulation or product development experience within nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, food, cosmetics, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience developing products from concept through commercialization in a regulated environment.
- Strong understanding of formulation science, ingredient functionality, and excipient selection for multiple dosage forms.
- Experience with processing technologies and working within GMP environments, including familiarity with 21 CFR Part 111.
- Hands-on experience with stability studies, including designing protocols and interpreting stability data.
- Proven experience with scale-up activities and technical transfers from lab to pilot to commercial manufacturing.
- Ability to analyze experimental data, apply scientific reasoning, and solve complex technical and process challenges.
- Experience working in a cross-functional product development environment with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, and Marketing.
- Proficiency in benchtop formulation and preparation of clinical or development samples.
- Strong skills in technical documentation, including SOP writing, batch record creation, and specification development.
- Knowledge of raw material evaluation and ingredient compatibility for nutraceutical and dietary supplement products.
- Understanding of GMP, ISO-related requirements, and quality systems relevant to dietary supplements.
- Ability to troubleshoot formulation and process issues and implement effective solutions in development and production settings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, functional foods, vitamins and minerals, botanicals, and consumer health products.
- Hands-on experience in gummy and other novel delivery system development for dietary supplements.
- Background in product development for tablets, capsules, powders, gummies, and softgels.
- Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies; DOE experience is preferred.
- Experience in process development and commercialization of new products.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Supply Chain.
- Experience in technology transfer activities between R&D and manufacturing sites.
- Ability to prepare and manage technical documentation for regulatory and quality purposes.
- Exposure to clinical sample preparation and support for studies involving dietary supplement products.
- Knowledge of raw material and excipient selection criteria for performance, stability, and regulatory compliance.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in an R&D laboratory environment within a large vitamin and supplement manufacturing organization that has a multisite nationwide presence and is part of a larger global pharmaceutical brand. The work involves hands-on formulation, benchtop experimentation, stability testing, and support for pilot and scale-up batches using standard laboratory equipment and processing technologies typical of dietary supplement and nutraceutical development. The environment emphasizes GMP and ISO-related quality standards, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong focus on innovation in consumer health products.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Valencia, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $62.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
