Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
This role focuses on performing blood draws and specimen processing in a physician office setting, supporting oncology patients and their care team. The phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate collection, receipt, and preparation of biological specimens for analytical testing, ensuring all samples are properly entered into the laboratory information system and routed to the correct analytical area. The position covers both pre- and post-analytical aspects of testing and may include specified analytical procedures as assigned, all while adhering to established codes of conduct and professional standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws on a wide range of patients, including cancer patients and individuals with difficult veins, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect biological specimens in accordance with established protocols and clinical guidelines.
- Receive specimens into the department and verify patient and specimen identification for accuracy and completeness.
- Accurately enter specimen and patient information into the company’s computer and laboratory information systems.
- Prepare samples for analytical testing, including labeling, aliquoting, and organizing specimens for processing.
- Distribute specimens to the appropriate analytical areas within the laboratory or facility.
- Handle pre-analytical tasks such as proper specimen collection, handling, and storage to maintain specimen integrity.
- Manage post-analytical tasks related to specimen disposition and documentation as required.
- Perform specified analytical testing and procedures as assigned, following all laboratory protocols.
- Collaborate closely with medical assistants and physicians in the office to coordinate patient flow and specimen collection.
- Provide compassionate and professional patient care, particularly for oncology patients who may require extra support.
- Follow all applicable codes of conduct, safety procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Contribute positively to a team-oriented environment and support colleagues to ensure efficient clinic and laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
- At least 1–2 years of phlebotomy experience, including experience with difficult blood draws.
- Demonstrated proficiency in blood collection techniques and venipuncture.
- Experience working with cancer patients or in an oncology setting.
- Strong skills in specimen collection, handling, and processing.
- Ability to accurately enter and manage data in a computer-based laboratory information system.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to work effectively as a team player in a clinical environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining specimen integrity.
- Excellent interpersonal and patient care skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with oncology patients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in a laboratory or clinical setting with direct patient contact.
- Phlebotomy experience in a physician office environment.
- Comfort working closely with medical assistants and physicians as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
- Motivation to grow within the organization, including advancement to higher-level phlebotomy roles.
- Reliability and consistency in maintaining professional standards and following codes of conduct.
Work Environment
This position is based in a physician office at a cancer center in Scottsdale, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The phlebotomist will draw blood from the physician’s patients, many of whom are oncology patients, and will work closely with medical assistants and other clinical staff in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. The setting involves regular use of phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, specimen handling tools, and computer systems for data entry and tracking. Professional, clinic-appropriate attire is expected to maintain a respectful and reassuring environment for patients.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Scottsdale, AZ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.36/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
