Position Summary
The Accountant is an integral part of the Tenaska Power Services Co. accounting function and is responsible for performing daily and monthly accounting activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, customer invoicing, financial analyses, and preparation of management, financial, tax, and regulatory reports. This position works closely with employees and management across the organization to understand how trading activities, electricity settlements, and contract terms impact accounting results.
The Accountant will also communicate with customers regarding billing and payment inquiries, assist with audits and process improvement initiatives, and develop a strong understanding of the wholesale electricity market, TPS energy trading and energy management business, and internal trading and settlement applications.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform daily accounting activities, including payment entries, database entries, journal entries, and other assigned accounting transactions.
- Prepare, review, and distribute monthly customer invoices, statements, and related reports.
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and financial analyses.
- Prepare assigned journal entries and associated supporting schedules.
- Prepare and update various management reports, typically using spreadsheets.
- Assist with the preparation of financial statements and internal and regulatory reports.
- Prepare assigned tax and regulatory filings.
- Assist with various internal and external audits.
- Communicate with customers regarding billing, payment inquiries, and issue resolution to support timely payments and accurate account information.
- Communicate with employees and management at all levels regarding accounting procedures and processes and ensure proper accounting treatment.
- Develop a strong understanding of internal trading and settlement applications and the electricity settlement process to assist with the preparation and review of invoices, statements, reconciliations, and financial information.
- Develop a strong understanding of how trade and contract terms impact financial statement results.
- Demonstrate an understanding of key accounting concepts and processes relevant to the accuracy and timeliness of reporting and proactively communicate potential issues to the supervisor.
- Actively participate in department and company process improvement and system enhancement projects.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the wholesale electricity market and TPS energy trading and energy management business.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to gather information, resolve accounting issues, and support business needs.
- Other projects and duties as assigned.
- Dependable, reliable, and predictable attendance is required.
Education/Experience/Skills
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Requirements:
- Masters degree and/or CPA.
- Experience utilizing Microsoft Office products, especially Microsoft Excel.
- Power industry experience.
- Experience with accounting, trading, settlement, or financial systems.
- Desire to learn and understand the wholesale electric power industry.
