Job Summary
The Sr. Engineering Manager is responsible for managing experienced professionals across multiple engineering domains. This role ensures the implementation of short-term strategies and policies, and influences broader organizational practices through technical leadership and innovation.
This job profile is intended for People Managers of 4+ experienced to senior expert-level employees.
Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

- Lead the Americas Engineering organization under a One Americas operating model.
- Develop and execute the regional engineering strategy aligned with business objectives and growth plans.
- Establish engineering standards, design practices, technical governance processes, and engineering procedures across the region.
- Drive resource sharing, collaboration, and workload balancing across engineering teams.
- Establish engineering KPIs, performance management systems, and organizational development plans.
- Recruit, develop, coach, and retain engineering talent.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Promote standardization and engineering best practices across all engineering disciplines and locations.

Design & Product Engineering

- Lead engineering support for MTCS products, including trays, structured packing, random packing, internals, separation equipment, and associated mass transfer technologies.
- Oversee product design, customization, validation, engineering calculations, and technical documentation activities.
- Ensure engineering deliverables, including approval drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of material, and design calculations, meet customer and Sulzer requirements.
- Establish design review and engineering approval processes across the region.
- Drive standardization, modularization, and design optimization initiatives.
- Support manufacturability improvements, quality enhancement, material optimization, and cost reduction efforts.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications, engineering standards, applicable codes, and internal requirements.
- Support development of new products, product improvements, and engineering innovation initiatives.

Application Engineering & Commercial Support

- Partner with Sales, Business Development, Product Management, and APT teams to support strategic opportunities and key customer pursuits.
- Provide technical leadership during proposal development, customer presentations, and technical clarification meetings.
- Participate in project kick-off meetings and customer technical reviews.
- Ensure technical solutions align with customer requirements and MTCS capabilities.
- Improve proposal quality, consistency, responsiveness, and technical competitiveness.
- Support strategic opportunities in refining, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, CCUS, hydrogen, sustainable fuels, and energy transition markets.
- Serve as the senior engineering escalation point for complex technical issues and customer challenges.

Project Engineering

- Partner with the Head of Project Management Americas to ensure successful execution of customer projects.
- Support project kick-off meetings, engineering planning activities, and technical reviews.
- Ensure engineering schedules align with customer commitments and project execution plans.
- Review engineering resource requirements and project priorities.
- Support technical risk assessments and mitigation planning.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Drive engineering change management and technical issue resolution processes.
- Establish consistent project engineering methodologies across MTCS Americas.

Manufacturing & Operational Support

- Support Manufacturing and Product Operations teams with technical expertise during fabrication, assembly, inspection, and testing activities.
- Resolve engineering-related manufacturing issues, non-conformances, and technical deviations.
- Drive design improvements that enhance productivity, quality, manufacturability, safety, and profitability.
- Support root cause investigations and implementation of corrective actions.
- Ensure lessons learned from manufacturing operations are incorporated into future designs and standards.
- Collaborate with Product Operations leaders to improve operational performance, throughput, and resource utilization.

Service Engineering Support

- Provide engineering expertise supporting Service Operations activities.
- Support revamps, retrofits, troubleshooting, reliability improvements, inspections, and turnaround execution.
- Assist with customer escalations requiring engineering support and technical evaluation.
- Support field issue investigations and technical problem resolution.
- Ensure lessons learned from field execution activities are incorporated into future designs, standards, and products.
- Strengthen collaboration between Engineering and Service Operations teams throughout the region.

Technical Excellence & Innovation

- Maintain engineering standards related to mechanical design, structural design, materials of construction, and applicable industry codes.
- Promote engineering automation, digitalization, and productivity improvement initiatives.
- Support implementation of engineering software, design tools, and engineering management systems.
- Drive engineering best practices, standard work, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Establish knowledge-sharing programs across engineering disciplines.
- Build organizational technical capability in design engineering, application engineering, product engineering, and project engineering.
- Promote innovation that enhances customer value and strengthens MTCS competitiveness.

Talent Development

- Establish engineering competency models and career development paths.
- Develop future engineering leaders and technical specialists.
- Promote technical knowledge sharing and cross-training throughout the organization.
- Support succession planning and workforce development initiatives.
- Build organizational capabilities necessary to support future growth and regional expansion.
- Create a high-performance engineering culture focused on accountability, collaboration, customer focus, and innovation.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline.
- Master's Degree preferred.
- Minimum 12 years of engineering experience in industrial manufacturing, refining, petrochemical, chemical, energy, or related industries.
- Minimum 5 years leading multidisciplinary engineering organizations.
- Strong experience in product engineering, design engineering, project engineering, and manufacturing support environments.
- Experience supporting engineered-to-order equipment and industrial manufacturing operations.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, materials of construction, engineering calculations, fabrication processes, and technical documentation.
- Proven commercial and customer-facing experience.
- Experience working within regional or multinational organizations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- English and Spanish proficiency required.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with trays, structured packing, random packing, internals, separation equipment, and mass transfer technologies.
- Familiarity with ASME, ASTM, AWS, API, and applicable customer specifications and industry standards.
- Experience leading engineering organizations across multiple countries or locations.
- Experience supporting both Products and Services businesses.
- Experience implementing engineering automation and digital engineering initiatives.
- Familiarity with SAP, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, engineering design software, and engineering management systems.
- Experience supporting refining, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, CCUS, hydrogen, sustainable fuels, or energy industries.
