About this role
The MEP Infrastructure Quality Assurance Manager leads the site quality assurance program for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, HVAC, and related infrastructure systems, ensuring construction and installation activities conform to engineering designs, industry codes, regulatory requirements, and Tesla standards. This position directs discipline QA inspectors and leads across electrical systems (busways, switchgear, transformers, distribution), wet and dry mechanical systems (piping, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, ductwork), plumbing, utilities, and welding, while overseeing surveillance, audits, inspection programs, and hold/witness point verification through construction, pre-commissioning, and system turnover.
You will serve as the primary quality partner to construction management, engineering, commissioning, contractors, and owner stakeholders driving safe, high-quality execution on complex industrial, manufacturing, data center, semiconductor, and clean-space projects. Success in this role requires maintaining uncompromising quality standards while building trusted relationships, acting as a solution provider, and educating project teams so issues are prevented or resolved early.
The quality program under your leadership will be positioned as a respected, value-adding resource that enables schedule and performance goals. You will spend significant time balancing field presence with leadership of the inspector team, trending issues, providing conflict resolutions, and continuously strengthening the quality culture across all projects sitewide.
- Lead and manage the MEP infrastructure QA program, including planning, prioritization, and oversight of surveillance, audits, inspections, and hold/witness point verification in accordance with the project quality plan, ITPs, applicable codes (NEC, IMC, IPC, ASME, AWS, NFPA, etc.), and Tesla standards
- Direct, mentor, and evaluate MEP discipline QA inspectors and leads (Electrical, Mechanical Piping, HVAC/Dry Mechanical, Plumbing/Utilities, and Welding); set clear expectations, balance workload, ensure qualifications, and develop the team’s technical and professional capability
- Serve as the primary QA interface with construction management, engineering, commissioning, contractor QC leadership, equipment vendors, and owner stakeholders on MEP quality status, risks, and resolution of systemic issues building collaborative relationships that keep quality viewed as a partner and resource
- Oversee identification, documentation, trending, root-cause analysis, and closeout of nonconformances (NCNs); drive effective corrective and preventive actions and act as a solution provider who educates contractors and project teams to mitigate recurrence and prevent future issues
- Review and approve (or recommend approval of) quality documentation packages, inspection reports, audit findings, and turnover deliverables for completeness, accuracy, and compliance across electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and welding scopes
- Plan and lead quality audits and process surveillances of contractor QC programs specific to MEP installations; evaluate effectiveness of inspection procedures, material control, testing, NDE, documentation, and corrective-action systems
- Champion a proactive quality culture: educate stakeholders on codes, specifications, and best practices; promote early engagement so the QA program is leveraged as a respectable resource that supports schedule and successful system turnover rather than perceived as a barrier
- Report MEP quality performance to project leadership (open NCNs, audit findings, ITP compliance, recurring deficiencies, and improvement actions); escalate critical risks appropriately while maintaining strong working relationships and driving continuous improvement
- Coordinate cross-discipline inspection readiness and support field inspectors on complex or high-risk activities involving busways/switchgear, process/mechanical piping, HVAC equipment and ductwork, plumbing/utilities, welding, and associated terminations and supports
- Ensure the team maintains organized records of inspections, NCRs, and corrective actions and that lessons learned are captured and shared to strengthen overall project quality execution
- Minimum of 10 years of quality assurance/quality control/construction management experience on large-scale industrial, manufacturing, data center, semiconductor, or clean-space construction projects, with at least 5 years in a QA leadership, multi-discipline supervision, or site quality management role (owner/client-side experience strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated experience directing or mentoring inspectors across multiple MEP disciplines (electrical, mechanical piping, HVAC, plumbing/utilities, welding) and interpreting technical documents, drawings, specifications, submittals, PQRs/WPSs, and project quality requirements
- Advanced knowledge of quality management systems and construction codes/standards applicable to MEP infrastructure (e.g., NEC, IMC, IPC, ASME B31.3, AWS D1.1, NFPA, ASHRAE, IBC) together with working knowledge of inspection, testing, and NDE practices used in field assurance programs
- Proven ability to investigate, trend, and resolve complex or systemic quality issues while acting as a collaborative solution provider; skilled at educating contractors, engineers, and construction teams so quality is embraced as an enabler
- Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills able to maintain high quality standards and project integrity while building trust, influencing without authority, and ensuring the QA function is respected rather than viewed as a blocker
- Experience leading in high-performance, fast-paced environments with aggressive construction and commissioning schedules; sound judgment under pressure and ability to balance field realities with formal quality processes
- Proficiency with inspection documentation software, reporting tools, NCR/CAPA systems, and turnover package requirements
- Minimum OSHA 10 (OSHA 30 preferred); comfortable in active construction environments and familiar with aerial lift operations and field safety expectations
- Preferred certifications or background (not required): relevant discipline credentials such as ICC, IAEI, API 570/577, AWS CWI, ASNT NDT Level II/III, NICET, IAPMO, ASSE, CQM/CQI, journeyman licenses, or equivalent multi-discipline quality credentials
- Physical ability to support field presence as needed and willingness to spend time on an active construction site while leading the broader MEP QA program
