Our Women in Trading Summer Internship offers female students in their penultimate year of study the opportunity to join us for 12 weeks and experience what a career in commodity trading could look like, within a supportive environment. At RWE Supply & Trading GmbH (RWEST), this extends beyond energy markets – our trading activities span a range of commodities, including power, gas and carbon, as well as areas such as metals, grains and freight.

You don't need previous trading or financial markets experience to apply. We're looking for curious, analytical people who are keen to learn, develop and work collaboratively, and interested in understanding how data, markets and commercial decision-making come together.

Our programme is designed to give you an authentic insight into a trading career at RWEST. You’ll be embedded within a front-office trading or analyst team, working alongside experienced colleagues, learning from their expertise and contributing to meaningful, hands-on work. Alongside your desk experience, you’ll take part in structured learning and development, giving you broader exposure to commodity trading and the wider RWEST business.

You'll also have access to mentorship, a dedicated buddy and a supportive network to help you build your confidence, develop your skills and feel supported as you navigate the trading environment.

About the role

From day one, you’ll have opportunities to:

- Develop your understanding of energy markets, from the fundamentals driving supply and demand to the strategies and technologies shaping modern trading.

- Use data and quantitative analysis to identify patterns and opportunities across power, gas and carbon markets.

- Explore how statistical models, technology and algorithms can support trading strategies and decision-making.

- Turn data into decisions, working with large datasets and analytical tools to transform complex information into meaningful commercial insights.

- Learn from experts across RWEST through training and insight sessions with different teams, building relationships and sharing knowledge while developing a broader understanding of our business and energy markets.

- Gain exposure beyond your home desk to other trading and analyst teams, learning from different perspectives and broadening your understanding of global energy markets.

- Work collaboratively with colleagues, contributing meaningful work while sharing your own ideas and perspectives as part of the team.

- Contribute meaningful work within your team, with your ideas and perspective valued from the outset.

Digital technologies, including AI-enabled tools, are becoming an integral part of how we work at RWE. Throughout the internship, you will have opportunities to use these tools responsibly to enhance productivity, support decision-making, foster innovation and improve ways of working, always in line with RWE policies and responsible use principles.

Job requirements and experience

We're looking for female students in the penultimate year of a highly quantitative or analytical degree, ideally on track to achieve a 2:1 or above, who are curious about energy, commodity trading and our markets.
Applicants will typically be studying a degree with a strong numerical, statistical, computational or data-focused component, such as:

- Mathematics or Statistics.

- Engineering.

- Physics.

- Computer Science or Data Science.

- Economics with a strong quantitative focus, such as econometrics, statistics or data analysis.

- Other disciplines with a significant quantitative, computational or data analysis component.

These examples aren't exhaustive. Whatever your degree discipline, we're interested in the skills and experience you've developed through your studies. You'll need to be comfortable working with numerical data, applying analytical thinking and using quantitative methods to explore problems and develop solutions.

Some prior programming experience is important for this internship, with experience using Python particularly relevant. You don't need to be an expert. Additional training and support will be provided throughout the programme. Experience with SQL, Power BI, automation technologies or AI-enabled productivity tools would also be useful.

No previous commodity trading or financial markets experience is required. We're interested in people who are curious about markets, enjoy learning and working with data, and are excited to develop their analytical and technical skills within a real-world commodity trading environment.

You’ll also need

- An interest in developing your commercial understanding.

- Clear and thoughtful communication skills.

- A collaborative approach and an interest in learning from others.

- Confidence working independently while also contributing as part of a team.

- Curiosity and a willingness to explore new ideas and different approaches.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel and PowerPoint.

Advantageous, but not essential

- Experience with Power BI, SQL, Python, automation technologies or AI-enabled productivity tools.

You’ll need to be available for the entire internship period, from 18 June 2026 to 10 September 2026 . During your internship, you’ll accrue annual leave, which can be taken with prior agreement. You should also be flexible and willing to travel to our Essen Campus for one week as part of the programme.
