Public Health Nutritionist

This is to work with the Shiprock, NM Indian Health Service for a 1 year contract with a potential to extend to 5 years

Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Public Health Nutritionist (Registered Dietitian) to join our team at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. The successful candidate will perform outpatient and occasional inpatient nutrition services, managing patients' needs as directed by the Medical Director and in accordance with the Shiprock Service Unit Medical Staff By-Laws.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Medical Nutrition Therapy
-Provide medical nutrition therapy to outpatients and occasionally to inpatients.
-Exercise comprehensive knowledge of medical nutrition therapy practices.
 
Diabetes Education
-Deliver individual counseling and group classes on diabetes self-management.
-Manage patients using continuous glucose monitors and blood glucose monitors.
-Assist with walk-in diabetes education coverage.
 
Wellness Programs
-Prepare meal plans for adolescent wellness camps.
-Participate in wellness education activities on or off hospital property.
 
Team Collaboration
-Work collaboratively with a 12-member Health Education Center team, including CDCES RNs, pharmacists, vision technicians, nursing assistants, exercise technicians, and program assistants.
-Coordinate with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in the outpatient clinic team.
 
Patient Caseload
-See between 5-15 outpatients per day in the Outpatient Clinic, which includes same-day and continuity care clinics.
 
Inpatient Services
-Provide basic diabetes and nutrition education to patients being discharged.
 
Consultation and Documentation
-Consult with Internal Medicine and Family Medicine staff on patient care matters.
-Review clinical records and adhere to documentation procedures to ensure proper maintenance.
 
Compliance and Guidance
-Perform duties in accordance with competency standards listed in the Shiprock Service Unit Medical Staff By-Laws.
-Adhere to the Northern Navajo Medical Center’s quality assurance plan.
-Receive technical direction or guidance from designated government officials as needed.
 
Qualifications
 
Licensure: Valid and current state Registered Dietitian license.
 
Experience: Priority will be given to candidates with experience in diabetes self-management education, including individual counseling and group classes.
 
Skills:
-Proficiency in managing patients with continuous glucose monitors and blood glucose monitors.
-Strong knowledge of medical nutrition therapy.
-Ability to prepare meal plans and conduct wellness education activities.
 
Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
 
Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
 
Compliance: Familiarity with clinical record-keeping and adherence to quality assurance protocols.
