Clinical Supervisor

The Clinical Supervisor provides clinical supervision, quality oversight, and professional development for the outpatient therapy team. The position promotes ethical, clinically effective, culturally responsive, and compliant behavioral health services while developing clinicians across experience levels. The supervisor oversees assigned clinical documentation, supports assessment and treatment decisions, assists with hiring and onboarding, contributes to student programming, and serves on the agency leadership team while maintaining a small psychotherapy caseload.

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical supervision and consultation

Provide board-approved supervision to assigned LPC Associates, maintaining supervision agreements, session records, required reports, evaluations, and remediation documentation. Schedule supervision to meet applicable Texas requirements, including at least four hours per month for Associates engaged in counseling, subject to applicable approved-leave provisions.

Provide clinical supervision or consultation to other assigned clinicians within the scope of the supervisor's license, competence, agency authority, and applicable professional rules. Support case conceptualization, diagnostic formulation, treatment planning, ethical decision-making, and complex cases.

Provide weekly supervision to assigned practicum students and interns as required by university agreements, academic standards, and agency policy. Coordinate student learning objectives, observation, feedback, and evaluations with faculty or field-placement staff.

Provide permitted agency-based clinical supervision to LMSWs and coordinate with an LCSW-S when supervision toward LCSW licensure is needed. LPC-S supervision alone does not meet the LCSW licensure-supervision requirement.

Clinical documentation and quality oversight

Review, approve, and co-sign psychotherapy progress notes, agency-designated site/service notes, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans, and other assigned clinical records as required by credential, payer, service, and agency policy.

Evaluate clinical accuracy, individualized treatment goals, medical necessity, risk documentation, service-to-treatment-plan alignment, and completeness. Return deficient records with actionable feedback and monitor correction through resolution.

Conduct risk-based chart audits and peer reviews; identify recurring deficiencies and implement training or remediation. Verify documentation-review responsibilities with the clinical and compliance teams rather than assuming every clinician requires the same approval workflow.

Clinical risk, ethics, and client safety

Provide timely consultation on elevated-risk cases, safety planning, crisis response, abuse or neglect concerns, ethical conflicts, and appropriate level-of-care referrals. Follow agency escalation procedures and applicable reporting requirements.

Address clinical complaints, boundary concerns, and potential impairment or competence issues. Escalate concerns to the Clinical Director and appropriate agency leaders and support corrective action within delegated authority.

Promote informed consent, client rights, confidentiality, culturally responsive practice, and appropriate telehealth safeguards. Participate in incident reviews and clinical quality-improvement activities.

Hiring, onboarding, and professional development

Assist with interviewing and selecting therapists, assessors, practicum students, and interns; provide input on clinical qualifications, readiness, and supervision needs.

Orient new clinicians to clinical workflows, assessment standards, treatment planning, documentation, electronic health records, crisis procedures, and professional expectations. Assess readiness for assigned responsibilities.

Provide ongoing clinical training, coaching, and professional development. Establish development goals, assess competence, and document progress and remediation needs.

Support practicum and internship programming through learning plans, faculty coordination, timely evaluations, and appropriate clinical assignments that develop competence and professional identity.

Leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration

Participate as a member of the agency leadership team and contribute to outpatient service planning, clinical policy development, staffing recommendations, and quality initiatives.

Collaborate with operations, quality/compliance, billing, care coordination, and Human Resources to address service barriers, documentation trends, training needs, and clinician performance concerns.

Monitor assigned clinicians' clinical workload, service access, and documentation trends. Recommend adjustments when caseload, acuity, or supervision needs exceed available capacity.

Direct clinical services

Maintain a small, assigned psychotherapy caseload; provide assessment, treatment planning, psychotherapy, and care coordination within credentialing and clinical competence.

Complete personal clinical documentation within agency timelines. Maintain a protected balance between direct care and supervision; individual caseload expectations are established in the approved workload plan.

Supervisory Authority and Role Boundaries

Provide clinical direction, evaluate assigned clinical work, request documentation corrections, develop remediation plans, and recommend changes to clinical assignments. Participate in performance evaluations and recommend personnel actions in coordination with Human Resources and senior leadership. Administrative direct-report relationships and final hiring, discipline, scheduling, and budget authority are determined by the approved organization structure.

Qualifications

Required

Master's degree or higher in counseling or a related behavioral health field from an accredited institution, consistent with Texas LPC licensure requirements.

Current, unrestricted Texas LPC license in good standing and active, board-approved LPC-S designation; ability to maintain all required credentials throughout employment.

At least five years of clinical practice following independent licensure, with competence in outpatient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotherapy.

Demonstrated ability to provide effective clinical supervision, constructive feedback, clinical coaching, and documentation review.

Strong knowledge of applicable professional ethics, Texas counseling requirements, privacy and confidentiality obligations, risk assessment, and agency/payer documentation standards.

Strong communication, organization, clinical judgment, conflict-resolution, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills; proficiency with electronic health records and standard office technology.

Preferred

At least one year of formal clinical supervision experience, including supervision of LPC Associates, practicum students, or interns.

Experience in outpatient or community behavioral health, insurance-based services, clinical audits, peer review, and clinician training or onboarding.

Experience serving the agency's populations, using evidence-informed treatment approaches, coordinating with academic programs, and supporting clinicians across experience levels.
