Job Title: System Safety Engineer 2 Job Description
The System Safety Engineer 2 plays a key role in executing the safety strategy for complex aerospace and defense programs, ensuring system safety and human systems integration (HSI) features are fully integrated into products. This role focuses on identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing solutions that protect people, hardware, and the environment, while supporting program milestones and contractual commitments. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams and program leadership to embed safety into every phase of the system lifecycle and contribute to reliable, secure, and mission-ready solutions.
Responsibilities
- Execute the safety strategy for the assigned program to ensure all milestones are met and system safety and HSI features are integrated into the product in compliance with contract requirements and awarded funding.
- Support the development and maintenance of the program schedule by integrating system safety tasks and activities into the program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS).
- Engage with the Lead System Safety Engineer and Portfolio Engineering Lead to obtain guidance on technical execution, review safety artifacts, and participate in customer reviews.
- Participate in multi-Integrated Product Team (IPT) program meetings to ensure system safety considerations are addressed and to stay informed about program-wide issues affecting safety.
- Ensure program leadership clearly understands system safety requirements, identified hazards, associated risks, and planned mitigation strategies.
- Meet internal and external commitments by delivering high-quality safety analyses, reports, and other required artifacts on time.
- Own technical safety solutions and collaborate across IPTs to develop and implement approaches that support successful product development and testing.
- Perform risk assessments to identify and evaluate potential safety issues and recommend appropriate mitigations.
- Create clear, concise technical reports, safety documentation, and presentations that communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Support the integration of safety into all phases of the system lifecycle to enhance reliability and protect end users, equipment, and the environment.
Essential Skills
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Secret security clearance.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience in engineering or a related technical field.
- Experience with risk assessment concepts and methodologies.
- Experience creating technical reports, performing technical writing, and/or developing technical presentations.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify hazards and assess associated risks.
- Effective communication skills to explain safety requirements, hazards, and mitigations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Active or transferable Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
- Experience with test equipment and test equipment safety in a laboratory environment.
- Experience performing MIL-STD-882 System Safety Program tasks and analyses, including management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400).
- Experience reviewing software code and requirements with a focus on safety considerations.
- Experience interfacing with other engineering functions such as Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
- Familiarity with human systems integration (HSI) principles and their application to complex systems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).
Work Environment
You will work within a dedicated System Safety and Human Systems Integration (HSI) department that focuses on embedding safety into every phase of the system lifecycle. The environment is highly collaborative, involving regular interaction with systems, software, firmware, and electrical engineering teams, as well as program leadership and customer stakeholders. Work typically takes place in an office and laboratory setting using modern test equipment and engineering tools to evaluate system performance and safety. This is a Contract position based out of Woburn, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $70.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
