Job Summary
Reporting to a Team Manager within the Director, DTO Americas organization, this newly created role has been established to support the continued development of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Transaction Monitoring capabilities across MUFG.
As a key member of the Global Financial Crimes Division Operations function, the Senior AML Transaction Monitoring Specialist will be responsible for identifying and developing financial crime detection scenarios, providing advanced analytics support for transaction monitoring optimization efforts, and coordinating the implementation of monitoring models designed to detect suspicious activity. This role will partner with regional and global stakeholders to enhance transaction monitoring effectiveness, strengthen financial crime controls, and drive a globally consistent approach to risk mitigation.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Monitoring & Scenario Development
- Design, develop, and enhance AML transaction monitoring scenarios and detection strategies.
- Perform quantitative analysis to support scenario tuning, calibration, optimization, and customer segmentation initiatives.
- Evaluate transaction monitoring model performance and recommend enhancements to improve alert quality and effectiveness.
- Support large-scale strategic optimization and segmentation programs across the Global Financial Crimes Division.
Data Analytics & Model Optimization
- Conduct detailed analysis of customer, account, KYC, and transactional data to identify trends, patterns, and emerging risks.
- Develop and maintain analytical models supporting transaction monitoring and screening programs.
- Perform scenario threshold testing, segmentation analysis, and model calibration activities.
- Execute above-the-line (ATL), below-the-line (BTL), and what-if analytics testing methodologies.
Program Implementation & Governance
- Coordinate with regional and global teams to implement transaction monitoring scenarios and model enhancements.
- Collaborate with Compliance, Financial Crimes, Risk Management, Technology, and Operations teams to ensure effective program execution.
- Support governance efforts and documentation associated with transaction monitoring model development and implementation.
- Assist leadership in driving continuous improvements across AML monitoring capabilities and financial crime risk management frameworks.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with stakeholders across GFCD and business units to establish clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and operational processes.
- Support regulatory examinations, audits, and program reviews related to transaction monitoring effectiveness.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives that enhance enterprise-wide financial crime detection capabilities.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Quantitative Analysis, Computer Science, Data Science, Technology Sciences, or a related field required.
- Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience designing, analyzing, testing, validating, or optimizing BSA/AML transaction monitoring models and/or OFAC sanctions screening models.
- Experience implementing, testing, or evaluating financial crime compliance systems.
- Strong understanding of AML data, including customer, account, KYC, and transactional datasets.
- Experience developing model tuning, calibration, segmentation, and optimization methodologies.
Technical Skills
- Hands-on experience with one or more programming languages or analytical platforms: SQL Python SAS R
- Familiarity with transaction monitoring platforms such as Actimize SAM.
- Strong quantitative and statistical analysis skills, including: Classification accuracy testing Name matching methodologies Fuzzy logic matching Decision trees Machine learning techniques Neural networks Unsupervised and supervised modeling approaches
Regulatory Knowledge
- Strong understanding of: Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations OFAC sanctions requirements USA PATRIOT Act FinCEN guidance FATF recommendations OCC, FRB, and SEC regulatory expectations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience interfacing directly with banking regulators, examiners, and enforcement agencies.
- Strong understanding of financial crime risk management frameworks.
- Experience supporting enterprise-wide transaction monitoring modernization or optimization initiatives.
- Knowledge of banking products, services, and transaction processing systems.

The typical base pay range for this role is between $91K - $118K depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. This role may also be eligible for certain discretionary performance-based bonus and/or incentive compensation.
