Emergency Department Clinical Leader / Nurse Educator
Position Summary
The Emergency Department Clinical Leader / Nurse Educator is an experienced Registered Nurse responsible for the day-to-day clinical leadership, staff education, and operational readiness of the Emergency Department, ED Observation, and Convenient Care services. Working within the authority delegated by the Director of Nursing, this position provides visible clinical leadership, bedside support, staff orientation, competency validation, coaching, and continuous improvement.
This is a working clinical leadership position with a substantial bedside component . The Clinical Leader / Nurse Educator serves as the primary nursing liaison for providers and the first-line resource for routine nursing concerns related to clinical practice, workflow, documentation, equipment, supplies, unit readiness, and patient care coordination.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on clinical leadership and direct patient care as needed.
- Coordinate daily nursing workflow and promote safe, efficient patient care.
- Serve as the primary nursing liaison between nursing staff and ED providers.
- Provide orientation, education, competency validation, and ongoing staff development.
- Conduct bedside coaching, mentoring, and clinical reeducation.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve routine clinical and operational concerns.
- Conduct fact-finding and provide appropriate coaching or corrective operational action within established policies.
- Follow through on identified problems and verify that appropriate resolution has occurred.
- Monitor documentation, clinical practices, equipment, supplies, and overall unit readiness.
- Support regulatory, quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Assist with implementation of policies, procedures, standards, and evidence-based practices.
- Provide guidance and support to nursing staff regarding patient care coordination and clinical decision-making.
- Communicate significant concerns and unresolved issues to the Director of Nursing.
- Provide direct RN staffing coverage when a call-in or open shift remains unfilled.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and a positive patient-care environment.
Scope of Authority
The Clinical Leader / Nurse Educator has functional authority to direct daily nursing workflow, clarify expectations, conduct fact-finding, provide coaching and reeducation, initiate corrective operational actions within policy, and verify resolution.
This position does not
independently hold primary responsibility for hiring, formal disciplinary action, payroll, budgeting, final employee evaluations, or final policy approval unless specifically delegated in writing by the Director of Nursing.
Qualifications
- Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in emergency or critical care nursing of 5 years.
- Two years' experience as a charge nurse, nurse supervisor, house supervisor or comparable clinical shift leadership role
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to educate, coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond appropriately to changing patient-care needs.
- Strong commitment to patient safety, quality, teamwork, accountability, and professional nursing practice.
- Emergency nursing certification and/or BSN preferred.
- BLS, PALS, and ACLS Certification upon hire or within the time frame established by hospital policy.
