Department Overview – Medical/Surgical

The Medical/Surgical Unit provides comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. RNs care for patients throughout their hospital stay, from admission through discharge, while monitoring for changes in condition and coordinating care with physicians and the interdisciplinary team.

This is a PRN night shift opportunity for an RN who enjoys a fast-paced environment, works well as part of a team, and is comfortable caring for a diverse adult patient population.

- Shift: Nights, 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
- Schedule: PRN scheduling based on department needs
- Patient Population: Adult medical and surgical patients

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse on the Medical/Surgical Unit is a key member of the patient care team, providing safe and comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The RN uses the nursing process to assess patient needs, develop individualized care plans, implement interventions, and evaluate patient responses.

Working the night shift, the RN is responsible for maintaining safe and effective patient care throughout the overnight hours, monitoring patients for changes in condition, managing medications and treatments, and communicating concerns to the appropriate healthcare team members. The RN collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and supports patients and families throughout their hospitalization.

Essential Functions of the Role

- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and prioritize patient needs based on condition, acuity, and individualized care requirements.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans and modify interventions as patient conditions change.
- Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to adult medical and surgical patients throughout their hospitalization.
- Monitor patients throughout the night for changes in condition, recognize potential complications, and communicate significant findings promptly.
- Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately according to physician orders, nursing standards, and hospital policies.
- Create a caring, safe, and supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, disease management, and discharge needs.
- Collaborate with physicians, patient care technicians, case management, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.
- Delegate appropriate tasks based on patient condition, staff competency, and established guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, patient responses, and changes in condition.
- Prioritize multiple patient care needs and utilize available resources effectively during the night shift.
- Participate in shift handoff and communication to promote continuity and safety of care.
- Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism while working in a PRN capacity and adapting to changing patient care needs.

Key Success Factors

- Familiarity with professional nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of medical-surgical nursing principles and the care of adult patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions.
- Awareness of legal requirements and standards of certification and accreditation bodies, including hospital and department/unit-specific policies.
- Good command of medical terminology, medication administration, health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and disease management.
- Strong clinical judgment and the ability to identify and report changes in patient condition.
- Ability to develop, implement, and modify patient care plans based on assessment findings and patient responses.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse members of the healthcare team.
- Strong critical-thinking, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple patient care responsibilities while maintaining patient safety and quality of care.
- Ability to work independently and effectively during the night shift while utilizing available resources and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a PRN environment.
- Basic computer skills necessary for electronic medical documentation and day-to-day assignments.

Qualifications

- Completion of an accredited course or have at least 2 years of experience surpassing the minimal qualification required.
- Field of Study: The applicable major should be nursing.
- A minimum of 2 years in a relevant role is expected.
- Certification: Hold a BLS certificate now or obtain within 30 days of starting in this role.
