Your Impact

The Vertex Mechanical Automation Co-Op program is a 6-month experiential training program for students currently working towards an undergraduate or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other related fields. If you are passionate, collaborative, and growth-minded, a co-op at Vertex will help you gain meaningful experience in our Automating Machinery & Processes functional areas and serve as a launchpad for your career.

What you will be doing:
In this co-op, you will be working with the Automating Machinery & Processes team to streamlining manufacturing, enhancing manufacturing reliability, and scaling life-saving therapies to reach patients faster. The Co-op will work with a passionate team of scientists, engineers, and innovators, all united by a shared mission: to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Cell & Gene Therapy. The Co-op will contribute by designing or participating in the design process of mechanisms, robotics, IMRs, and automated equipment.

Key Deliverables at Project Completion :

- Detailed Design Specification for automated equipment, including, but not limited to: 3D models
- Detailed Drawings with GD&T
- Bill of Materials
- Manual
- Maintenance Procedure

- Mechanical Technical Readiness Plan for Automated Equipment
- Equipment Layouts
- Facility and Utility Requirements for Automated Equipment
- FAT and SAT Reports

Key Learnings Expected:

- Experience with equipment development ANSI and ISO standards
- Design for Manufacturability
- Design for Quality
- GMP Equipment Development Process
- Lean Principles

What you will need to succeed:

Required skills:

- Mechanical Design
- Solidworks 3D modeling
- Mechanical Drawings & GD&T
- Proficiency in Microsoft products (word, powerpoint, excel)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Preferred: Lean Fundamentals
- Preferred: Robotic experience
- Preferred: Mechanism design
- Preferred: 6S principles

- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or another related field

- Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships/co-ops or entry level roles within this part of the organization.
- You must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before June 2027
- You must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from January – June 2027

- Full-time, paid co-op $25.00 – 50.00 USD/hour

Flex Designation: Hybrid-Eligible Or On-Site Eligible in Boston or Providence, RI

Flex Eligibility Status:

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:

1. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select

2. On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
