CARDIOLOGY - CLINICAL SCHEDULER/PROCEDURAL PREPARATION AND RECOVERY REGISTERED NURSE

Idaho Falls Community Hospital is looking for a Clinical Scheduler/Procedural Preparation and Recovery Registered Nurse to join our team!

JOB SUMMARY: The clinical scheduler/pre/post Registered Nurse serves primarily as the coordinator and scheduler for outpatient interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and non-invasive cardiac procedures. This role is responsible for coordinating patient care throughout the procedural continuum, including patient scheduling, pre-procedural assessment, obtaining required documentation and diagnostic testing, patient education, and ensuring all procedural requirements are completed prior to the scheduled procedure. In addition to procedural coordination and scheduling responsibilities, the RN provides clinical support to the procedural services team as operational needs allow. Clinical duties may include pre-procedural patient preparation, initiation of IV access, intraprocedural assessment and monitoring, administration of moderate (conscious) sedation during non-invasive cardiac procedures such as transesophageal echocardiograms and cardioversions, and post-procedural recovery and monitoring of cardiac catheterization laboratory and interventional radiology patients. The RN functions as a patient care expert in all aspects of procedural preparation, coordination, monitoring, and recovery. The nurse is responsible for identifying and responding to patient decompensation or procedural complications before, during, and after cardiology and radiology procedures, administering medications and sedation as appropriate, and collaborating effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, technologists, and nursing staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Expertise with vascular access management and procedural recovery is preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Serve as the primary coordinator and scheduler for outpatient cardiology procedures, ensuring accurate and timely scheduling while maintaining efficient utilization of provider and procedural resources.

2. Receive, review, and process procedural orders, ensuring required documentation, testing, authorizations, and clearances are obtained and completed prior to scheduling.

3. Contact and schedule cardiology patients, provide procedural education and preparation instructions, and complete pre-procedure nursing assessments including review of medical history and medications.

4. Conduct pre-procedure nursing phone calls for both cardiology and interventional radiology patients to assess procedural readiness, review medications, and reinforce preparation instructions.

5. Act as a liaison between patients, providers, procedural departments, and supportive services to facilitate coordinated, high quality patient care.

6. Manage multiple communication channels, service lines, and competing priorities while maintaining exceptional customer service, and attention to detail.

7. Performs nursing assessments to gather data and identify the patient's needs in the realm of intraprocedural care.

8. Evaluates pre-procedural documentation and laboratory values and communicates effectively to physicians if necessary, requirements are not met.

9. Prepares patients efficiently for cath lab and interventional radiology procedures including establishing IV access, drawing blood for preoperative labs, performing EKGs, vascular access site prep, performing admission documentation and patient history via preop call or upon the patients arrival. Assists in obtaining informed consent and ensuring other documentation required for the procedure is on the physical or digital chart.

10. Primary nursing care for patients undergoing transesophageal echocardiograms and electrical cardioversion. Monitors the patients vital signs, end tidal CO2 values, and administers medications for conscious sedation. Recovers patient to baseline.

11. Manages the care of patients postoperatively following cath lab and interventional radiology procedures. Demonstrates competency in pulling vascular sheaths, monitoring vascular access sites, early identification of complications, and communication to the physician to determine treatment and resolution.

12. Provides pre-procedural and discharge education to the patient and family members, maintaining empathy and professionalism at all times.

13. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate optimal patient care and outcomes.

14. Provides care based on established standards of practice, policies and protocols.

15. Demonstrates critical thinking skills and problem-solving ability to anticipate and respond to patient care needs

16. Documents non-invasive cardiac procedural details, patient assessment, vital signs, education, vascular access site management, and medications in the Cerner electronic health record.

17. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve processes and outcomes.

18. Administers conscious sedation/anxiolysis under direct supervision of a physician after demonstrating competence and completing required education.

19. May participate in after hour and on-call coverage in the cardiac cath lab/interventional radiology suite with appropriate training, not required.

20. Willingness to perform care for critically ill patients in emergent, high-stress, and code blue situations.

21. Performs other duties as assigned.

22. Completes annual education requirements.

23. Maintains biannual license requirements, certifications, and CEUs.

24. Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA guidelines at all times.

25. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.

26. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.

27. Attends annual review and department in-services.

28. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

29. Actively participates in performance and quality improvement activities.

30. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

31. Required to check emails and be responsible for its content daily.

32. Stocks supplies used in the pre/post procedural preparation setting on a daily basis and regularly checks inventory for monthly outdates.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited RN program. Current BLS and ACLS certifications required. Completion of the Basic Dysrhythmia class.

Experience: Past Preop/PACU, cath lab, ICU, ER, or IR experience is encouraged. Demonstrates the ability to function Knowledge of twelve lead EKG interpretation, interpretation of end tidal CO2 waveforms with clinical correlation, cardiac medications, emergency management of cardiac patients, ability to establish IV access in difficult patients, vascular access site management, and current clinical practice guidelines in cardiology. Experience administering conscious sedation is preferred.
