Sr. Software Engineer - Full Stack Java

Overview

Join M&T Bank's API Services organization as a Full Stack Software Engineer supporting the Development Portal Team, where you'll help power and evolve the technology behind the bank's enterprise API ecosystem. This highly visible role offers the opportunity to develop and support solutions that handle millions of API requests across internal and external banking applications while contributing to strategic initiatives involving API gateway technologies, enterprise integration platforms, and AI-enabled development. You'll work alongside a collaborative, high-performing engineering team with broad technical exposure and the opportunity to influence some of the bank's most progressive technology initiatives. This role is ideal for a versatile engineer who enjoys working across the full technology stack and contributing to both development and platform support functions.

Primary Responsibilities

- Work independently and within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, develop, and support applications that solve business needs and minimize risk to the Bank by writing clean, resilient, and maintainable code.
- Design, develop, and enhance Java-based backend services and Angular front-end applications supporting the bank's API ecosystem.
- Build and support API-driven solutions, integrations, and services that enable internal and external banking applications.
- Regularly review pull requests, provide feedback, and execute change management activities to ensure code quality and maintainability.
- Author organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code in one or more programming languages, applying appropriate data structures and algorithms to solve business problems.
- Utilize source code management tools to manage and deploy applications, ensure compliance with SDLC policies, and support merge conflict resolution.
- Independently analyze and critique technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, accuracy, and feasibility.
- Troubleshoot and provide support for platform-related issues across development and production environments.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, product owners, and business stakeholders to document and communicate technical implementation details.
- Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to improve code quality, performance, and security.
- Contribute to application architecture discussions and technology decisions supporting API platforms and enterprise integration services.
- Participate in AI-assisted development initiatives and contribute to innovation efforts across the engineering organization.
- Support highly available, enterprise-scale platforms and applications that process significant transaction and API volumes.
- Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
- Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Education and Experience Required

- Associate's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years' education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience.
- Advanced proficiency in a minimum of one relevant programming language.
- Experience developing Java-based applications and services.
- Experience with Angular or similar modern front-end frameworks.
- Full Stack software engineering experience across frontend, backend, and integration layers.
- Experience working with APIs, RESTful services, and API-driven architectures.
- Experience utilizing source control and software development lifecycle tools.
- Ability to work across multiple technology domains, including software development and platform support.
- Experience supporting complex enterprise applications and technology platforms.

Education and Experience Preferred

- Advanced analytical skills specific to application development.
- Experience working in a collaborative Agile team environment.
- Strong Full Stack engineering background with both backend and frontend development expertise.
- Experience with API management, API gateway technologies, or enterprise integration platforms.
- Exposure to cloud-native technologies and modern software development practices.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale applications with high transaction volumes.
- Exposure to AI-related development initiatives and AI-assisted engineering tools.
- Ability to work autonomously while managing multiple priorities and complex projects.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to adapt quickly and contribute across multiple technical disciplines.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Financial services experience preferred.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $97,100.00 - $161,800.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
