Principal Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Bayer Radiology is seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Research & Development team and lead the design and development of innovative medical devices used by healthcare professionals worldwide. In this senior technical leadership role, you will drive new product development, product enhancements, and sustaining engineering initiatives while collaborating with global teams across engineering, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and commercial functions.

Working across the full product lifecycle, from early concept and design through to product realisation and commercial launch, you will have the opportunity to contribute to globally distributed products and collaborate with stakeholders across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Role Responsibilities

- Lead product development activities from concept through design, verification, validation, manufacturing release and commercial launch.
- Act as a technical mentor and team leader, supporting the development of junior engineers.
- Collaborate with global engineering teams and support product launches in international markets.
- Lead mechanical design activities for new product development programs and product enhancements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Plan, manage, and coordinate engineering activities to meet project and business objectives.
- Drive the investigation of field reliability issues, customer feedback, and root cause analyses.
- Partner with Product Supply teams to resolve manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and material issues.
- Define engineering requirements and lead design reviews throughout the development lifecycle.
- Lead risk management activities, ensuring compliance across product development programs.
- Provide expert technical advice to project teams and key stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and external stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering and development processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and quality standards, including TGA, CE Mark, and ISO 13485 requirements.
- Stay current with emerging manufacturing technologies, prototyping methods, and engineering best practices.

Required Experience & Qualifications

- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in a senior engineering role, ideally within a highly regulated industry such as medical devices, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or advanced manufacturing.
- Demonstrated expertise within a technical discipline, with the ability to solve complex engineering problems and develop innovative solutions.
- Strong experience leading mechanical design activities across product development programs.
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders and provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams.
- Extensive experience leading mechanical engineering activities within the medical device or other highly regulated industries.
- Demonstrated experience working within design control and regulated product development environments.
- Proven experience delivering products through the full development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacturing release and commercialisation.
- Experience supporting products distributed across global markets is highly regarded.
- Experience with mechanical CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo/ProE, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of engineering design principles, risk management, and product lifecycle management.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working within regulated quality systems and product development frameworks is highly regarded.
- Medical device development experience will be highly advantageous.
