The Mission - Why This Program, Why Now?
You're joining at the defining moment of one of the most significant technology programmes Australia has ever undertaken. This programme will build and operate the dedicated cloud giving Australia's national security community and its allies the capability to see more, share more, innovate and act faster than ever before.
The architectural decisions being made now - how we structure services, implement security controls, and automate at scale - will shape how Australia's national security community operates for the next decade. You won't be inheriting someone else's design choices. You'll be making them.
Your Opportunity
Imagine standing at the intersection of strategy, technology, and national purpose, where every product decision you make shapes how an entire AWS cloud region serves Australia's most critical missions. As a Senior Product Manager – Technical, External Services (PMT-ES), you won't just manage a product backlog. You'll own the end-to-end lifecycle of externally-facing AWS services. From defining the technical vision and product strategy, through architecture and launch, to driving adoption and operational excellence with the engineering and IT leaders who depend on your services every day.
This is a role for someone who thrives on complexity, brings deep full-stack technical fluency, and craves impact at scale. You'll define technical requirements alongside engineering teams building the next generation of cloud infrastructure, evaluate architecture trade-offs across performance, scalability, and security, and serve as the voice of the customer for external engineers and IT professionals integrating AWS services into their most critical workloads. When a customer escalation hits, you'll own it, diving deep with engineering to understand the problem, resolve it, and communicate clearly back to technically sophisticated customers.
The Region Services team is redefining how AWS designs, builds, and operates regions. You'll engage directly with technical decision-makers at Australia's most important organisations, understanding how they architect their solutions, generalising requirements across diverse customer personas, and driving service awareness, adoption, and evolution. Your work will directly accelerate Australia's cloud capability and set the standard for how sovereign cloud regions evolve worldwide.
If you're energised by working at the deepest technical levels of cloud services, engaging directly with the engineers and architects who build on AWS, and delivering products that genuinely change how nations operate in the cloud, this is your moment.
Key job responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for externally-facing AWS services in the region, defining service vision, strategy, technical requirements, and roadmaps, while driving capacity planning and service performance.
- Define and prioritise product roadmaps by engaging directly with external technical customers (engineers, architects, IT professionals), analysing usage data, service performance metrics, and competitive dynamics to anticipate where customers need to go next.
- Partner deeply with engineering teams on architecture decisions, evaluating proposals across performance, scalability, latency, and security trade-offs. Define detailed technical requirements and hold engineering to high standards for service quality.
- Serve as the Voice of the Customer distilling requirements from diverse sets of technical customers, understanding how the service integrates into their architectures, and generalising needs across customer personas to define the right product direction.
- Own service adoption and operational excellence driving awareness, adoption, and performance optimisation with customers. Own customer escalations, and service communications until issues are resolved.
- Collaborate across engineering, design, finance, sales, legal, and operations to align stakeholders, make smart trade-offs, and deliver outcomes that balance customer value with business sustainability.
A day in the life
Your morning begins with a review of service readiness dashboards, tracking which services are on track for launch, where integration testing is surfacing issues, and which customer workload requirements are driving prioritisation decisions. You spot a gap between a customer's architecture needs and a service's planned launch configuration, and pull together the data to make the case for adjusting the rollout sequence.
By mid-morning, you're in a technical design review with the engineering team. A service needs to meet specific compliance requirements before it can go live so you're evaluating the architecture against these constraints, defining the technical requirements, and working through trade-offs between launch timeline and operational readiness.
After lunch, you join a working session with a customer's cloud architects who are planning to migrate mission-critical workloads into the region. They need to understand which services will be available at launch, how they'll perform at scale, and what their migration path looks like. You walk through the region's service roadmap, capture their architectural requirements, and feed those directly into your prioritisation decisions.
The afternoon shifts to a cross-functional alignment session. You're bringing together engineering, capacity planning, compliance, and business development to resolve competing priorities for the launch window. You present your readiness assessment backed by customer commitment data and technical dependency analysis, and drive the group to a decision on what ships in the initial launch versus the fast-follow roadmap.
You end the day knowing that the region you're building will directly enable Australia's national security community to operate with confidence in the cloud and that tomorrow will bring an entirely new set of technical challenges worthy of your expertise.
