Staff Software Engineer & Line Manager – Machine Learning (C++ & Vulkan)

Would you like to combine hands-on software engineering with the opportunity to develop and support other engineers?

Were looking for a Staff Software Engineer and Line Manager to join Arms Central Engineering Machine Learning Group. This is an opportunity to contribute to the ML SDK for Vulkan , an open-source project helping developers deploy machine learning workloads through Vulkan across a wide range of platforms and devices.

The role combines technical contribution and people leadership . Alongside designing, developing and improving software, youll support engineers as they develop their skills, take greater ownership and progress in their careers.

Our work spans machine learning, graphics and compute APIs, compilers, runtime libraries, developer tooling and next-generation GPU and NPU hardware. We collaborate across these areas to solve engineering challenges and improve how machine learning runs on Arm technology.

We have dedicated Technical Leads who own technical direction. The Line Manager works in partnership with them, bringing together people development, engineering capacity and successful delivery.

Responsibilities

As part of the team, you will:

- Support a group of software engineers through coaching, feedback, career development and performance support.
- Partner with Technical Leads to align skills and engineering capacity with technical priorities.
- Contribute hands-on to the design, implementation, debugging, testing and maintenance of the ML SDK for Vulkan.
- Help us build an inclusive engineering environment where people can collaborate, learn, take ownership and improve.
- Plan and coordinate work across roadmap development, ecosystem requirements, software quality and maintenance.
- Strengthen team capability through hiring, onboarding, mentoring and skills development.
- Collaborate with architects, technical leads and engineering teams across the wider ML and Vulkan ecosystem.
- Help turn engineering challenges into clear, achievable work while maintaining strong standards for software quality.

Required Skills and Experience

Were looking for a software engineer with strong modern C++ experience and scripting skills, ideally using Python. Experience designing, developing, debugging, testing and maintaining complex software systems is important.

Experience leading, mentoring, coaching or managing software engineers is also important, alongside an interest in developing people and building effective teams. This includes providing constructive feedback and supporting engineers at different stages of their careers.

The role requires experience coordinating engineering work across competing priorities and collaborating with technical leaders and architects. Knowledge of software development practices including code review, CI, testing, release processes and Agile development will also be valuable.

Experience across environments such as Linux, Android, emulators or software models is useful, together with the ability to learn new technologies and apply existing knowledge to new engineering challenges.

Clear written and spoken communication skills will support collaboration across teams, disciplines and locations.

Nice To Have Skills and Experience

Experience across every area below is not expected. Relevant experience could include:

- Formal line management, including career development, goal setting, performance support or recruitment.
- Building engineering teams through hiring, onboarding, mentoring or capability development.
- Open-source development or large software projects with complex dependencies.
- Vulkan, OpenCL, CUDA, DirectX, Metal or similar graphics and compute APIs.
- Machine learning frameworks, inference runtimes or model tooling.
- CI/CD, CMake, cross-compilation, packaging or developer tooling.
- Performance analysis, profiling, optimisation or benchmarking.
- Android, embedded Linux, mobile platforms, software models or emulators.
- Distributed or cross-functional engineering teams.

Not every successful candidate will have experience in all of these areas. We encourage applications from people whose experience aligns with the core requirements and who are interested in developing their knowledge further.
