Software Engineer III - AS/400 + LANSA + RPG

As a Software Engineer III - AS/400 + LANSA + RPG at JPMorgan Chase within the Commercial & Investment Bank, you'll serve as a seasoned member of an agile team to design and deliver trusted market-leading technology products in a secure, stable, and scalable way. You are responsible for carrying out critical technology solutions across multiple technical areas within various business functions in support of the firm’s business objectives.

Job responsibilities
- Own delivery from requirements analysis through design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Develop, enhance, integrate, and support ACBS-related applications, batch processes, data flows, and loan servicing workflows.
- Provide production, DevOps, and infrastructure support to ensure reliability of batch services, APIs, integrations, and core servicing capabilities. Troubleshoot complex issues and drive root-cause remediation.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code; perform code reviews; establish coding standards; support architecture reviews; and improve team delivery through automation, reusable patterns, and engineering efficiencies.
- Diagnose and resolve complex application, batch, database, and integration issues using IBM iSeries debugging tools, job logs, SQL analysis, and performance-tuning techniques.
- Deliver solutions aligned to firmwide cyber, risk, regulatory, and control requirements, including secure-by-design practices, vulnerability remediation, and operational readiness.
- Maintain high-quality technical documentation, including design documents, runbooks, implementation plans, support procedures, and operational handover materials.
- Partner with product owners, business stakeholders, operations teams, technology partners, and leadership to clarify requirements, communicate technical options, and deliver pragmatic solutions.
- I dentify opportunities to modernize legacy processes, improve platform capability, increase resiliency, and enhance developer productivity.
- Leverages enterprise-authorized AI coding assist tools within the work environment to improve code quality, delivery speed, and productivity across complex deliverables (e.g., code generation/refactoring, unit test creation, documentation), while validating outputs through peer review, automated testing, and secure coding standards; contributes learnings and reusable patterns to improve broader team effectiveness.
- Applies knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation.
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 3+ years applied experience
- Expert proficiency in CLP, CLLE, RPGLE, SQLRPGLE, free-format RPG, LANSA, and Visual LANSA IDE development.
- Strong hands-on RPG development experience with solid CL programming knowledge.
- Strong LANSA and Visual LANSA IDE development experience, including application development, troubleshooting, and support.
- Strong SQL proficiency, including writing and optimizing complex queries, preferably with DB2 / DB2 for i.
- Advanced debugging and root-cause analysis using tools and techniques such as STRDBG, STRISDB, Service Entry Points, job logs, Visual Explain, and RPG diagnostics.
- Experience with IBM MQ, CDC Replication, InfoSphere CDC / IIDR or equivalent technologies, including implementation, support, and troubleshooting.
- Experience across the full SDLC, delivering production-grade solutions in globally distributed technology teams and Ability to design, develop, test, implement, and support application features end-to-end while improving performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Ability to quickly understand complex systems, simplify technical concepts, and communicate options, risks, and recommendations to cross-functional partners and leadership.
- Hands-on experience using enterprise-authorized AI-assisted software development tools within the work environment (e.g., for coding, test creation, troubleshooting, or documentation) with demonstrated ability to critically evaluate, validate, and refine AI-generated outputs for correctness, performance, and security.
- Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, including data sensitivity considerations, secure handling of inputs/outputs, and adherence to resiliency and security expectations; ability to guide peers on safe and effective usage within team practices.
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Experience with files, views, indexes, triggers, stored procedures, performance optimization, and capacity planning.
- Experience in a financial services environment, preferably in a controls-driven engineering and production support setting.
- Understanding of commercial lending, credit products, loan servicing processes, and related operational workflows.
- Experience supporting, enhancing, integrating, or modernizing ACBS and related commercial loan servicing ecosystems.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, build and release automation, monitoring, deployment processes, and operational readiness.
- Familiarity with approved AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development efficiency, code quality, and delivery speed.
