About this role
Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.
Your role
We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.
Background
Autonomous systems no longer operate in isolation. Modern applications-from autonomous vehicle fleets and robotic swarms to traffic management systems-require multiple AI agents to coordinate, communicate, and adapt in real-time.
These collaborative systems must handle dynamic environments, distributed decision-making, unexpected disruptions, and evolving operational directives. The complexity of multi-agent coordination introduces significant challenges - how can we validate that these systems will perform reliably in real-world deployment before risking physical infrastructure or safety-critical operations?
Description of the Thesis Project
Testing collaborative AI systems presents a fundamental problem: the behavior of multi-agent systems is difficult to predict, emergent properties are hard to isolate, and real-world testing is expensive and risky. Traditional simulation environments may not capture the complexity of real-world dynamics, while purely physical testing cannot explore the full space of possible scenarios. The key question is: how can we design testing and simulation frameworks that rigorously validate multi-agent AI systems across different coordination paradigms-centralized, consensus-based, and distributed/autonomous-while bridging the gap between simulation and real-world deployment?
This MSc thesis investigates the design and implementation of a comprehensive testing and simulation infrastructure for collaborative multi-agent AI systems, with autonomous vehicles as the primary application domain. The project will design a testing framework that can handle one or several of the different decision-making architectures (centralized, consensus-based, distributed). The project will be implemented and demonstrated in a simulated environment and potentially the Visionen arena at LiU—a real-world test environment equipped with precision positioning systems and projectors.
