CBC News is looking for an exceptional leader and accomplished journalist to drive editorial assignment of our Canadian coverage, ensuring audiences are getting the news they need every day.

As the executive producer of Canada’s newsgathering team, you and co-executive producer are working with news leaders across the country to drive live and daily domestic news coverage across visual, audio, text, streaming and social platforms. You’re a leader who is motivated by serving audiences with breaking news and the latest developments on major stories.

The work is inherently dynamic, with tight deadlines and the constant evolution of stories. You are fearless amid ambiguity, remaining calm and responding quickly as stories unfold and programming teams lean on you for guidance. You help deploy teams to gather, verify and present accurate information to audiences.

You have a deep understanding of what drives the audience to watch, listen and read across dayparts, relying on data and research to inform your decisions. You bring extensive knowledge and appreciation of live production across platforms, modular and visual storytelling, and digital presentation. Your curiosity encourages experimentation, and leads to transformative change within a newsroom.

CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is your constant companion, guiding your journalistic decisions across the day. You are constantly seeking out new perspectives and driving inclusive journalism.

You bring an intelligent curiosity to the role everyday as you work to identify, develop and coordinate both daily coverage and planned events. You know collaboration is key to the newsroom’s success. You’re a critical link between CBC News and the journalists you support. You ensure your teams are receiving feedback and getting opportunities for development.

What you'll be doing:

You'll be front and centre in driving journalism, innovation and connection. In this role:

- Editorial and Assignment Planning: You, working closely with your fellow executive producer of Canada newsgathering, are a key decision maker in determining what stories we cover 24/7 and across platforms. You are plugged into what’s happening across Canada, scanning the competition, digging into meeting minutes and creating calendars for upcoming events.  You can pivot quickly to cover breaking and live news; and are equally adept at planning for future events and specials in collaboration with CBC News colleagues. You are innovative in your approach with a focus on finding more opportunities to report live from the field.
- Deployment & Resource Co-ordination:  You oversee assignment meetings and the pitch process, ensuring a Canadian overview is reflected in our daily news coverage. You  ensure deployment roadmaps, budgets and travel are planned out as required. You ensure your teams are connecting with producers across CBC News to coordinate coverage for programs and platforms, integrating world and regional teams to bolster coverage plans when required. You work closely with newsroom leadership to manage deployments while prioritizing the physical and mental well-being of employees.
- Leadership & Staffing: You are a key leader within CBC News. You connect regularly with senior leadership about staffing requirements, interpersonal relationships and any necessary shift changes. You create a culture of collaboration, feedback and support, ensuring the safety and well-being of the team is considered in every assignment.
- Champion Audience Growth: Your decisions are focused on expanding our reach to new and younger news consumers, and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians. You understand the pulse of Canadian audiences, their habits and what they need from your coverage. You are able to translate insights and data into actionable content strategies for all platforms.
- Uphold Journalistic Excellence: You have a deep understanding of CBC’s rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practises. You help your team navigate complex ethical and legal considerations with grace and precision.
- Foster Authentic Storytelling: You champion content that truly reflects the richness and diversity of perspectives, ideas, and real-life experiences. You inspire your team to think inclusively, always asking whose voice is missing and you work diligently to close that gap. You collaborate with journalistic leaders across CBC News, ensuring our daily coverage is reflective of the stories and issues that help Canadians make sense of their world.
- Innovate & Strategize: You demonstrate daily the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape proliferated with misinformation, disinformation and rapidly evolving technologies. Verification is a core value. You lean into data, and use it to drive audience-focused strategies for your team. You translate big ideas into tangible actions.

We're looking for someone who:

- Has a minimum of seven years of leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving breaking news, national coverage and overseeing large teams through times of change. Experience risk assessment and management is an asset, experience in change management.
- Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking, news judgement and a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues in journalism.
- Is an astute strategist, capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results that meet the evolving needs of Canadian news consumers.
- Finds solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues and can make decisions on tight deadlines; can effectively juggle multiple short and long term tasks and projects.
- Is comfortable navigating rapid change, troubleshooting complex situations, and making swift decisions under pressure.
- Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of both domestic politics, events, geography, and history, coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions.
- Has a university degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Is flexible to work varying hours and overtime, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays to respond to the demands of live and breaking news.

This is a eight-month position that can be based anywhere in Canada where there is a CBC station. As collaboration is a key requirement, you will be expected to be on-site. This is a Monday-Friday role. Hours that could be adjusted based on operational needs.
