Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Position Summary

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to maintain and improve the golf course, grounds, and surrounding landscape areas to the highest standards of quality, playability, appearance, and safety. This position assists with daily golf course operations, turfgrass management, irrigation, chemical applications, equipment maintenance, and staff supervision.

The ideal candidate is a motivated, hands-on professional with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a passion for golf course maintenance and agronomy.

Essential Responsibilities

- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with the daily maintenance and management of the golf course and surrounding grounds.
- Help plan and execute daily and seasonal maintenance practices for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and landscaped areas.
- Supervise, train, and direct maintenance staff in the absence of or under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent.
- Operate and maintain a variety of turf maintenance equipment, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, sprayers, and other specialized equipment.
- Assist with mowing, edging, trimming, aerification, topdressing, overseeding, fertilization, and other turfgrass management practices.
- Assist with irrigation system operation, troubleshooting, repairs, and routine maintenance.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and other turf and landscape products in accordance with label requirements and applicable regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of chemical applications, irrigation practices, weather conditions, maintenance activities, and other agronomic information.
- Monitor turfgrass, soil, and environmental conditions and communicate potential disease, pest, drainage, or irrigation issues to the Golf Course Superintendent.
- Assist with integrated pest management and environmentally responsible turfgrass management practices.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and assist with preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance facility, equipment area, and work environment.
- Assist in preparing the golf course for tournaments, special events, and daily play.
- Ensure all work is performed safely and according to established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate professionally with the Golf Course Superintendent, golf professional staff, club management, employees, members, and guests as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent.

Qualifications

- Previous golf course maintenance, turfgrass, landscaping, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of turfgrass maintenance practices and basic agronomic principles.
- Experience operating turf maintenance equipment preferred.
- Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and troubleshooting preferred.
- Ability to safely handle and apply fertilizers and pesticides.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Pesticide applicator's license/certification, or the ability to obtain one, preferred.
- Turfgrass, horticulture, agronomy, or related education preferred but not required.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality playing conditions.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, lift, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely operate and work around turf maintenance equipment, vehicles, chemicals, and other maintenance-related tools.

Work Schedule

This position requires a flexible schedule based on golf course maintenance needs, weather conditions, tournaments, and seasonal demands. Early mornings, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime may be required.
