Grounds Worker (Desoto)

Northwest Mississippi Community College is seeking a full-time Grounds Worker at the Desoto campus in Southaven, MS. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: weed eating, mowing, and blowing of all lawn areas. Work on seasonal lawn projects including sod installation, bed weeding, mulching, digging, planting, campus wide clean up, drainage projects, and winter prep for turf.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license

- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, continuously walk, stand, bend, squat, and sit

- Must have past job experience working out doors in lawn mowing or weed eating, landscaping maintenance, construction or site cleanup, farm and agriculture or nursery work.

- Must be able to work in conditions of high pollen, dust, or any other natural outdoor air quality

- Experience and working knowledge with weed eaters, blowers, lawn clean-up equipment a plus

- High school diploma or equivalency preferred

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Weed eating, mowing, and blowing of all lawn areas.

- Work on seasonal lawn projects including sod installation, bed weeding, mulching, digging, planting, campus wide clean up, drainage projects, and winter prep for turf.

- Work conditions are outside in all seasonal weather conditions.

- Maintain a professional work environment, abiding by NWCC rules and policies.

- Participate in daily crew meetings. Attend safety meetings.

- Respond to inclement weather events, possibly at times when campus is closed.

- Any and all other duties assigned in the areas of the physical plant construction, maintenance, grounds, etc. as assigned by the Grounds and Landscaping Supervisor and/or Foreman.

- Strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

- Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively as part of a team.

- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining campus aesthetics, quality work and safety standards.

- Possess basic knowledge of grounds maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEAMANDS AND WORK CONDITIONS:

- Work is primarily performed outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.

- Regular exposure to dust, pollen, and other outdoor air quality factors.

- Frequent physical activity including walking long distances, standing for extended periods, bending, squatting, digging, lifting, and carrying heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

- Regular use of power tools and lawn maintenance equipment.

- May be required to respond to emergencies or weather-related events outside of normal working hours.

- May be required to assist with lawn care at other college locations.

- May be required to work extended hours as needed.
