Theater Assistant Technical Director

HIRING RANGE: $32.36 - $35.96/hour

Under the general direction of the Theater Technical Director, provides operation or supervision of all technical and performance activities at the Lakewood Cultural Center and Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Amphitheater. This is a hands-on production position generally filling one of the lead crew positions necessary for execution of all performances at LCC, HLBP, or other HCA sponsored events for the City of Lakewood. The Theater Assistant Technical Director supports theater operations through the safe use and maintenance of lighting equipment, projection and related computer equipment, sound systems, stages, dance floor, rigging equipment and other materials related to the theater.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.

- In collaboration with Theater Technical Director, is responsible for safe operation of the LCC theater and amphitheater and safeguards the technical assets of the venues, including lighting, sound, rigging, tools and other equipment.
- Supports the Theater Technical Director with the coordination of production information for rental clients and road managers to determine, plan, develop and schedule the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, stage equipment and production crew for events and performances at City venues.
- Operates or supervises the operation of lighting, sound, scenic and other systems for a wide range of performance genres and differing levels of production sophistication for rental and touring events. Programs or designs sound and lights as needed.  Theater Assistant Technical Director acts as Technical Director when Technical Director cannot be onsite, including supervision of production crew.
- Maintains lighting and sound systems. Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment. Assists with maintaining equipment inventory and ensures necessary supplies are available. Assists with identification tagging of all equipment and furnishings at the theater and amphitheater.
- Maintains skills and up-to-date knowledge of theater equipment and operations, including any necessary certifications.
- Maintains a high level of professionalism in the delivery of technical production and customer service. Coaches the production crew as requested to consistently meet these standards. Maintains tact and composure in stressful and time-sensitive environments.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with rental clients, artistic personnel, vendors, co-workers in various City departments, volunteers, and others. Will on occasion interact with high profile City officials such as the Mayor, City Council members and the City Manager.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received : Supervision from the Theater Technical Director.

Supervision Exercised : None. Informally assists in directing work of variable part-time theater technical crews and authorized rental client crews, as assigned.

- Requires extensive evening and weekend hours and on occasion, work on holidays.
- Required to maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on the job due to failure to utilize PPE, a safety violation can be taken.

Technological Skills

- Strong overall knowledge of word processing, Excel, Power Point, Q-Lab, audio, lighting and video networking protocols such as Dante and SACN, PC and Mac software and applications.

Education and Experience (Must represent the minimum required for this position)

- Education:  High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Design/Technical Theater, preferred.

- Experience : Three (3) or more years of progressive professional technical theater production experience in either lighting or audio in a high-volume performing arts venue or touring environment preferred.
- Three (3) or more years of progressive experience with live music, musical theater, dance, conference and event production with a primary focus in either Lighting Design/Production or Audio Engineering/Production, as well as demonstrated experience with lighting and/or sound design, live mixing, general stagecraft, video production, rigging, crew scheduling and supervision.
- Demonstrated knowledge of performance and production conventions, terminology, sound and lighting design concepts, physical plant and stage mechanics for theater, dance, concerts, orchestras conferences and events are required.

Certification/Licenses/Specialized Training

- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain within three months of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.
