Software Engineer (Embedded Systems & Vulnerability Research)

As a Software Engineer, you will spend your day designing, coding, and testing software. Our projects are non-standard, highly customized, and will push you to new levels as a software developer. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of the software development life cycle with a focus on innovation and supporting cutting-edge R&D efforts.

## Job Summary

Battelle is seeking Software Engineers at multiple career levels to support the design, development, analysis, and security assessment of embedded systems. These roles combine software engineering, low-level system development, reverse engineering, vulnerability research, and secure software practices across mission-critical environments.

The ideal candidate possesses strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python, experience developing or analyzing embedded systems, and an interest in identifying and understanding software vulnerabilities. Candidates may contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and implementation to testing, debugging, security analysis, and operational deployment.

These position may be based out of either Battelle offices in Columbus, Ohio or Chantilly,VA.

## Responsibilities

- Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications for embedded and edge computing platforms.
- Develop software primarily using C, C++, and Python.
- Analyze firmware, operating systems, and embedded applications.
- Support vulnerability research efforts including identification, analysis, reproduction, and documentation of software weaknesses.
- Develop tools, automation scripts, and proof-of-concept capabilities.
- Perform debugging and root cause analysis of software and system issues.
- Support integration and testing activities across hardware and software environments.
- Contribute to secure software development practices and code reviews.
- Document technical findings, software designs, and engineering processes.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, cybersecurity, and research teams.

## Key Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field; or equivalent experience.
- Strong programming experience in: C, C++, Python
- Experience with: Embedded systems development
- Linux-based operating systems
- Software debugging and troubleshooting
- Source code management tools (Git)
- Software testing methodologies

- Strong curiosity about how systems work internally.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

## Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This job posting is targeting multiple positions with various levels of experience across multiple locations. A candidate’s salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications, and salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions. See below for estimated ranges:

Columbus, OH - $75,500 (Early Career) to $175,000 (Senior)

Chantilly, VA - $105,000 (Early Career) to $220,000 (Senior)
