Position Summary

The North Texas Float School Nurse provides direct nursing coverage and regional Health Services support across Great Hearts Texas campuses in North Texas. The position is designed to provide flexible nursing capacity where needs are greatest, including temporary campus vacancies, employee leaves, periods of high clinical demand, nurse onboarding, and other short-term or emerging coverage needs.

When assigned to a campus, the Float RN functions as the school nurse and provides comprehensive nursing services supporting student health, safety, attendance, and access to education. In addition to direct campus coverage, the Float RN assists the North Texas Regional Nurse and Director of Health Services with orientation, training, quality assurance, emergency preparedness, documentation review, and other Health Services priorities as assigned.

The Float RN practices in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act, Texas Board of Nursing rules and standards, applicable state and federal requirements, and Great Hearts Texas Health Services policies and procedures.

Roles and responsibilities:

- Provides nursing coverage at Great Hearts Texas North Texas campuses based on operational and clinical need; assignment location may vary from day to day or for extended periods.
- Provides temporary coverage for nurse vacancies, leaves of absence, absences, onboarding periods, high-acuity needs, and other staffing gaps as directed by Health Services leadership.
- Functions as the campus school nurse when assigned, including nursing assessment, triage, intervention, emergency care, follow-up, and appropriate disposition for students presenting to the school clinic.
- Recognizes changes in student condition and escalates significant clinical concerns promptly through established Health Services procedures.
- Provides care for students with acute illnesses, injuries, chronic conditions, disabilities, and other health needs that may affect participation in school.
- Safely administers medications and nursing treatments in accordance with provider orders, parent/guardian authorization, district procedures, and applicable nursing standards.
- Maintains accurate medication records and documents administration, refusal, omission, error, and other disposition as required.
- Maintains strict accountability for controlled medications, including receipt, counting, secure storage, administration, reconciliation, and prompt reporting of discrepancies.
- Performs skilled nursing procedures and treatments within the RN scope of practice and according to student-specific orders and plans.
- Implements and supports Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and other student-specific nursing plans as appropriate.
- Coordinates care for students with diabetes, severe allergies, asthma, seizure disorders, cardiac conditions, and other significant health needs.
- Participates in Section 504, ARD, or other student-support processes when health needs affect educational access or school participation, as needed during campus assignments.
- Responds promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies and maintains readiness for anaphylaxis, respiratory emergencies, opioid overdose, diabetic emergencies, seizures, cardiac emergencies, significant injury, and other urgent health events.
- Maintains emergency medications, equipment, and supplies in accordance with district expectations.
- Maintains complete, accurate, timely, objective, and confidential documentation in the district electronic health record.
- Supports immunization compliance, state-mandated screenings, communicable-disease response, and required reporting at assigned campuses.
- Delegates nursing tasks only when appropriate under the Texas Nurse Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing rules and provides required training, direction, supervision, and evaluation.
- Educates and supports faculty and staff regarding student health needs, emergency plans, medication procedures, and other health-related responsibilities.
- Assists the North Texas Regional Nurse with new-nurse orientation, onboarding support, competency validation, and follow-up as assigned.
- Assists with Health Services audits and quality-assurance activities, including review of documentation, medication processes, controlled-medication procedures, emergency preparedness, clinic organization, and compliance with district standards.
- Assists with staff training, emergency drills, district initiatives, and regional Health Services projects as assigned.
- Helps identify operational or clinical concerns observed during campus assignments and communicates them promptly to the North Texas Regional Nurse and/or Director of Health Services.
- Supports campus nurses during periods of unusually high acuity or workload when directed by Health Services leadership.
- Maintains an organized, safe, appropriately supplied clinic while assigned to a campus and ensures medications, controlled substances, medical supplies, and confidential health records are securely stored.
- Communicates professionally and effectively with students, families, campus leadership, Health Services leadership, healthcare providers, and other members of the school community.
- Follows Great Hearts Texas Health Services policies, procedures, clinical standards, documentation expectations, and escalation requirements.
- Participates in required continuing education, meetings, training, drills, audits, and quality-improvement activities.
- Maintains required nursing licensure and certifications and performs other nursing and student-health responsibilities consistent with the position and RN scope of practice.

Additional Requirements:

Must complete Texas Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance and background check.

Regular travel among Great Hearts Texas North Texas campuses is an essential function of this position. The employee must be able to report to different North Texas campuses based on coverage needs and Health Services direction. Reliable transportation is required.

Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitive hand and body movements, bending, squatting, reaching, rapid response to emergencies, assisting students with mobility or positioning when necessary, and performing CPR and other emergency interventions. May be required to move or position routine medical supplies or equipment up to approximately 50 pounds.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements.

Travel required: May need to travel locally for training and professional development opportunities.
