The Opportunity

Moonee Valley City Council is seeking a strategic and influential leader to join our People & Culture team as Head of People and Safety for a fixed term 12-month period.

This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving a culture of safety, wellbeing and accountability across the organisation while leading the delivery of Council's workplace health and safety, injury management and return to work functions. This role partners closely with leaders across Council to develop and implement contemporary safety strategies, improve organisational capability and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice standards.

Reporting to the Manager People & Culture, you will provide organisation-wide leadership on workplace health and safety, injury management and workers compensation matters, using data-driven insights to create safer workplaces and improve outcomes for our people. You will also lead a dedicated team, influence organisational culture and drive initiatives that support both physical and psychological safety.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of People and Culture Department, the Head of People and Safety provides leadership to the WHS team in the delivery of accurate customer focused WHS advice, consultancy and support provided to the Moonee Valley City Council (Council) workforce; including:

- Build, develop and foster a safety culture in the organisation

- Develop a wholistic, people centred, safety and injury prevention/management action plan.

- Inculcate psychosocial risk management into the organisation’s safety and wellbeing “business as usual”

- Align with other P&C team to ensure holistic and people centres levels of service and organisational support.

- Use data and evidence-based thinking and judgement to inform decision making and advice on safety and wellbeing within the organisation.

What you’ll bring

- Experience in navigating complexity and sensitivity, with a positive, solution and outcome focussed mindset.

- Strong internal relationship and stakeholder management

- Exemplar change management skills and experience

- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.

- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic programs, policies and initiatives that improve safety performance and organisational culture.

- Strong understanding of Victorian workplace health and safety and workers compensation legislation, or the ability to rapidly acquire deep expertise in this area.

- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Workplace Health & Safety, Human Resources, Risk Management or a related discipline, or equivalent extensive experience.
