Job Description – Junior Consultant, Urology
Position

Reporting To: Head of Department / Unit Head – Urology
Job Purpose
To provide comprehensive clinical care to patients with urological conditions under the guidance of senior consultants, while supporting outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and procedural services. The Junior Consultant will be responsible for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, follow-up, and assisting in urological procedures and surgeries.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care & Clinical Management
- Evaluate patients presenting with urological complaints in OPD, IPD, and emergency settings.
- Take detailed medical history and perform appropriate clinical examinations.
- Review laboratory investigations, imaging, and other diagnostic reports.
- Formulate preliminary diagnosis and treatment plans in consultation with senior consultants.
- Provide appropriate medical management and follow-up care.
- Monitor patients admitted under the department and identify any deterioration requiring immediate intervention.
- Maintain continuity of care from admission through discharge and follow-up.
- Counsel patients and attendants regarding diagnosis, treatment options, procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
2. Urological Procedures & Surgical Support
- Assist senior consultants in major and minor urological surgeries and procedures.
- Independently perform procedures appropriate to the level of training and credentialing.
- Assist in endourological procedures, urinary tract instrumentation, catheterization, and other routine urological interventions.
- Participate in pre-operative assessment and post-operative management.
- Monitor patients for post-operative complications and initiate appropriate management.
- Ensure proper documentation of procedures, operative notes, and patient outcomes.
3. OPD & Emergency Services
- Conduct scheduled OPD consultations and review follow-up patients.
- Attend emergency urological cases and provide timely initial assessment and management.
- Respond to emergency calls from wards, ICU, and other clinical areas.
- Coordinate with emergency medicine, anaesthesia, radiology, nephrology, oncology, and other relevant specialties when required.
4. Inpatient Management
- Conduct daily rounds for patients admitted under the urology service.
- Review clinical progress, investigations, treatment plans, and medication requirements.
- Coordinate with nursing and allied healthcare teams for effective patient management.
- Prepare discharge summaries and ensure appropriate follow-up instructions.
- Escalate complex or critical cases to the senior consultant/HOD.
5. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the hospital information system.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of consultations, procedures, progress notes, discharge summaries, and consent forms.
- Follow hospital clinical protocols, infection-control practices, patient-safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure appropriate informed consent is obtained before procedures and surgeries.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
6. Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate patient care with other specialties and departments.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case discussions where required.
- Work closely with nursing, radiology, pathology, laboratory, pharmacy, and other support services.
- Support efficient coordination of investigations, procedures, and patient transfers.
7. Academic & Professional Development
- Participate in departmental academic activities, CME programs, journal clubs, and case presentations.
- Keep updated with current clinical guidelines and advances in urology.
- Participate in teaching and mentoring of junior doctors, residents, and medical trainees as applicable.
- Contribute to clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives, research, and publications where required.

- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
- Urinary tract infections
- Lower and upper urinary tract disorders
- Haematuria
- Urological emergencies
- Acute urinary retention
- Urological trauma
- Male infertility and selected male reproductive disorders
- Erectile and other male sexual disorders
- Urological malignancies
- Prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular conditions
- Congenital and acquired urological disorders
- Pre-operative and post-operative urological care

Qualifications & Experience
- MBBS with a recognized MD/MS/DNB in Urology / Genitourinary Surgery , as applicable.
- Valid medical registration with the appropriate medical council.
- Relevant clinical experience in Urology.
- Candidates with experience in a tertiary-care or multispecialty hospital environment will be preferred.

- ### Education & Professional Qualifications
MBBS from a recognized medical college/university.
- MS/DNB in General Surgery from a recognized institution.
- MCh/DNB (Urology/Genitourinary Surgery) from a recognized medical institution.
- Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) / respective State Medical Council.
- Fellowship or additional certification in Urology, Endourology, Uro-Oncology, Andrology, or related subspecialties will be an added advantage.
